Music Theory I Musicianship Levels, Fall 2019

A minimum of 5 levels passed in sightsinging and 5 levels in rhythm are required to pass
the course. Half credit will be given to students who attend office hours and work with
the instructor and successfully complete half of an excerpt.

Sightsinging: (10% of final grade)


2.8, 2.26, 2.43, 3.17, 3.33, 3.38, 3.46, 4.34, 4.53, 4.79, 5.5

Rhythm: (10% of final grade)


1.10, 1.23, 1.27, 1.53, 1.58, 4.17, 4.23, 4.68, 4.71, 10.19, 10.26

Ear Training (10% of final grade)


Any levels passed in teoria at 70% are worth ½ of a point. Levels passed during in-class
testing will count as a full point toward your total.

Ear Training (teoria.com and “in-class” testing)


Intervals (minimum of 15 required to pass each level in teoria)
1. major and perfect ascending
2. major and perfect descending
3. all intervals ascending

Scales (minimum of 15 required to pass each level in teoria)


1. major and minor, (major, natural minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor)

Chords (minimum of 15 required to pass each level in teoria)


1. Triads: major, minor, diminished, augmented in root position
2. Seventh Chords: dominant seventh, major seventh, minor seventh, half-diminished
seventh and fully diminished seventh in root position arpeggios

Rhythmic Dictation: (5 hearings for in-class testing, no limit in teoria)


1. 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, eighth note, no syncopation, no rests, no triplets
2. 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 eighth note, no rests, no duplets
3. 2/2, 3/2, 4/2, quarter note, no syncopation, no rests, no triplets
4. 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, eighth note, syncopation, rests, no triplets
5. 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 eighth note, rests, no duplets

Melodic Dictation (5 hearings for in-class testing, no limit in teoria)


1. major, quarter, simple, notes 1 to 3
2. major, quarter, simple, notes 1 to 5
3. major quarter, simple, arpeggios (I-IV-V7)
4. minor, quarter, simple, notes 1 to 3
5. minor, quarter, simple, notes 1 to 5
6. major, quarter, simple, notes 1 to 7
Two Voice Dictation (5 hearings for in-class testing, no limit in teoria)
1. major, quarter, 3 notes
2. major, quarter, 4 notes
3. major, quarter, 5 notes
4. major, quarter, degrees I and V
5. major, quarter, degrees I, IV and V

Two Additional Exam Scores

Keyboard (worth one exam score)


Play all major chords in root position with the left hand through the cycle of ascending
fourths. The tempo will be 72 for the quarter note. Each chord will be called out by
name and each note named in tempo. This level will be passed when the cycle is
completed with no more than one error in tempo or chord name. This skill will count as
one exam score.

Example: C major – CEG, F major – FAC, Bb major – BbDF, Eb major – EbGBb, Ab


major – AbCEb, Db major – DbFAb, C# major – C#E#G#, F# major – F#A#C#,
Gb major – GbBbDb, Cb major – CbEbGb, B major – BD#F#, E major – EG#B,
A major – AC#E, D major – DF#A, G major – GBD, C major - CEG

Identification (worth one exam score and taken as part of the final exam)
1. Major keys (15 seconds)
2. Minor keys (25 seconds)
3. Triads (major, minor, diminished, augmented), (25 seconds)
4. Intervals (30 seconds)
