GUIDELINES
While P&WC wants to obtain full and frank input from its DOFs, P&WC does not want this
conference to be misconstrued by any participants, aircraft owners, operators or others as a
forum for P&WC and/or the DOFs to reach any agreement or understanding regarding
competitively sensitive issues, such as the pricing or cost of these products and services that
DOFs buy and sell for the customers they support. Accordingly, there shall be no discussions
related to such topics and no exchange of such competitively sensitive information during this
conference. P&WC and the DOFs must each independently and unilaterally decide how they
will price their products and services, and how they will deal with customers and third parties in
the marketplace.

For example, there shall be no discussion and no agreements or understandings that will be
reached regarding how any customers or other third parties will be treated; P&WC and the
DOFs will each make their own decisions in that regard. Similarly, there shall be no discussion
and no agreements or understandings that will be reached regarding spare part pricing; once
again, P&WC and the DOFs will each make their own decisions in that regard.

If anyone has any questions regarding these guidelines, please submit them to P&WC Legal
for review.

RECORD
Description:
To troubleshoot engine performance events,
it is important to understand and keep the
record of the last known good condition: new
engine, or engine post overhaul or HSI.
Keep and trend the following records:
• GPAC and Margins
• Starting characteristics,
• ECTM data
• Borescope report

ECTM Baseline
ECTM baselines need to be set only after
bleeds blanked runs and ECS system tight
(no pneumatic leak).
Do not re-baseline ECTM on
ducting/airframe with pneumatic leak, it will
show a flat graph but the engine is still
running hot.

EEC & PEC FAULT CODES Difficulties EMM FC

EEC and PEC Fault Codes

Maximum 8 fault codes stored in EEC.
The fault codes does not have time-stamped
information. Use ATR previous/last leg reports to
confirm.

Recommendation
Record and troubleshoot EEC fault codes in
accordance with weekly check
• Access EEC fault code
• Follow FIM/Fault Isolation Chart
• Erase fault codes
• Perform engine run to confirm

Previous/Last Leg reports in ATR will indicate there is

a fault in EEC/PEC. Access EEC/PEC to know the
fault codes.

ENGINE GROUND RUN ATR Difficulties
EGR

Engine Ground Run (EGR/ERU, GPAC)

Perform full power engine run up: GI/feather, GI/auto,
FI/auto, 90% Torque, RTO and Max Reverse.
Record starting characteristic (ITT, 1st Peak, 2nd Peak)
Provide the reason for EGR/ERU
The full spectrum engine run up data can be used to
analyze:
• The possibility of torque splits/throttle staggered: by
comparing Torque at FI, at green band and max
reverse
• To detect PVM or transfer tube for correct adjustment
• To detect MFCU adjustment
• To detect a hot section problem
• To detect a pneumatic leak
• To detect IBV/HBOV failed in open position
• Troubleshoot starting defects
• Detect shift in performance
• Confirm defect rectification
• To confirm the engine meets certification performance
requirement.

ENGINE GROUND RUN ATR EGR
Reverse

At FI/Auto
Ensure PVM is properly rigged, transfer
tube is already rigged at basic 4 turns
position, and PEC is correctly trimmed
prior checking engine torque at FI.

To prevent throttle stagger post engine

replacement, ensure torque at FI, torque
at reverse, torque within the green band,
are as close as possible with opposite
engine.

ENGINE GROUND RUN ATR EGR
RTO

At 0.9 RTO (PAC)

Ensure engine has sufficient
margins (ITT, NH and NL).
Observe the nominal/usual value,
this will be used for reference of
troubleshooting of high ITT, bleed
leak, IBV/HBOV failed in open, or
hot section deterioration.
For PW127 series, sea level, OAT
25-33C, the figure is approx. 799
(700C, 99% NH, 99% NL)
Note: for illustration only.

When performing EGR at high

power with EEC OFF, MFCU will
work in manual mode. If MFCU
has a sheared coupling, the
engine may go to overspeed.

FUEL HEATER Troubleshooting
Fuel Temp
High

(THERMAL ELEMENT)
Description
Fuel heater cools the oil and heat up the fuel to
prevent fuel icing. The fuel temperature must not be
too high which can cause fuel vapor lock.
P&WC allows the replacement of thermal element
assy.
Issue
IFSD due to Low Oil Pressure.
Fuel entering oil causing fuel smell in oil tank. Oil
entering fuel causing oil loss.
Probable Causes
O-ring damaged during thermal element replacement.
Push rod guide dislodged and coming out during
removal of thermal element.
Contributing Factor
EMM test procedure post fuel heater thermal element
replacement is not sufficient to detect internal leak.

Export Classification: P-ECCN 9E991 P&WC Proprietary Information For Planning Purposes Only 94
PUSH ROD GUIDE Fuel Heater
Push Rod
Guide

Issue
During removal of fuel heater thermal
element, push-rod guide was dislodged
and came out together with thermal
element.
Thermal element is an LRU, but Push
Rod Guide is not.

Recommendation
Push rod guide is not LRU.
If push rod guide comes out together
with thermal element, to replace fuel
heater assy.

ENGINE STALL/SURGE Troubleshooting Surging

Description
The air flowing over the
compressor airfoils can stall, becoming
unstable and the compressor can no
longer compress the incoming air.
The high-pressure air escapes forward
through the compressor and out to the
inlet, audible as a bang.
A tail pipe fire may occur due to lack of
air in the combustion.
ITT will increase, Torque will drop with
NH/NL speed change.

IBV/HBV AND ENGINE SURGE Engine Surge IBV/HBOV

Issue
IBV/HBV is not opening during transient,
acceleration or deceleration may cause
engine to surge.

Possible Causes
• Restrictor partially blocked: IBV closing point
schedule will change
• Screen dirty: IBV oscillation or IBV closing
too early
• A loose or dirty connector at servo valve:
IBV remains close. Perform connector care.
• Servo valve faulty
Preventive Maintenance
Depending on the environment, to introduce
IBV servo valve screen cleaning at certain
interval. IBV servo
screen dirty

Restrictor is calibrated to the engine, it follows the engine.

Closing
IBV CLOSING POINT CHECK Engine Surge IBV/HBOV
Point

Issue:
IBV closing too soon may cause
engine surging. Check IBV closing
point IAW EMM 72-01-30.
Adjust IBV orifice/restrictor
depending on the result.

Procedure
There is no actual indication for IBV
position. The IBV position is derived
by comparing NL value between
scheduled-open position with the
force-closed position.
If delta NL is 3-6%, IBV was open Non ATR -
timely. 600, use
Alpha Call
If delta NL is less than 0.5%, there Up to see
is no change in IBV position. NL in digital
value

Note:
On ATR, pull the EEC CBs to force-close
IBV. Putting the EEC Switch to OFF, IBV
function is still alive.

Pneumatic leak may cause ITT take-off

to increase between 5-25C, gradually
Sources of pneumatic leak:
• IBV discharge duct seal (ATD)
• Leading edge seals
• Underfloor seals
• P3 supply to deicer boot
• Loose/crack ducting or clamps

If the delta ITT is more than 8C, there is

pneumatic leak. If delta ITT is less than 8C, no
conclusion.
Please consult with ATR/airframe for the
pneumatic leak troubleshooting method

HIGH ITT: SAMPLE CASE #1 High ITT
Cases

Case #1:
PAC with ITT margin -10C, NH and NL margin
remain positive. PAC was carried out at high OAT.
NL margin is low: possibly IBV and ATD Discharge
duct leak (P2.5 leak).
Pneumatic leak, engine performance, or possibly
ITT indication issue.
A combination of pneumatic leak, IBV/ATD
Discharge Duct leak, and engine performance are
possible.

Steps:
• Review ECTM, review previous PAC
• PAC with caps
• Check ATD/IBV Telescopic duct seal
• Check pneumatic leak, at FI/Auto with Pack valve
OFF, and compared with Bleed ON and OFF (8C)
and rectify the pneumatic leaks
• Do recovery wash to bring down ITT (approx. 5C
only)

HIGH ITT: SAMPLE CASE #2 High ITT
Cases

Case #2:
PAC with ITT margin -10C, NH margin 0 but with
good NL margin: 1.3%
Poor ITT and NH margin, with good NL margin is a
sign of IBV or ATD Discharge Duct leak (P2.5).
A combination of pneumatic leak, IBV/ATD Discharge
Duct leak, and engine performance are possible.
ITT indication is normal.

Steps:
• Check ATD/IBV Telescopic duct seal
• Check pneumatic leak, at FI/Auto with Pack valve
OFF, and compared with Bleed ON and OFF (8C)
and rectify the pneumatic leaks
• Do recovery wash to bring down ITT (approx. 5C
only)
