To Be Young And Aware Of Diversity

As some of us may know that diversity generally means variety, a mixture, as in if you
put the word diversity in a sentence it’ll be like this “it is the diversity of wildlife that many
travel to Africa to see” it means because of their variety of animals that many would come to
see. So what is diversity exactly? Well in this context diversity means to recognize our individual
diferences. What do you mean by individual differences, some might ask, well you can ask
yourself what’s the diference between you and the person you sit next to, what’s the difference
between you and all the people in this room. The difference can be vary, tthese can be along
the lines of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical
abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies, whichever makes that person
unique.
So with that in mind we were brought to another question, why do we have to be aware of this
diversity, well you see we’re all a unique individuals, we don’t always have the same oppinion,
the same taste, the same beliefs so we can not always assume something about someone, a
simple example of this would be some people likes pineapple on their pizza, some people don’t,
some people eat meat and some are vegan. So by being aware of this diversity one can explore
differences within each individuals and understand each other. So next time you order a pizza
make sure that the person is okay with meat or pineapple. And being aware of diversity can
also teach us about tolerance, for example if you have a group assignment and you were
planning on doing it on Sunday morning but one of your friend might be late because they have
to attend church on Sunday morning, thus you learn to be tolerant of your friend’s lateness.
So "Diversity" means more than just acknowledging and/or tolerating difference. Diversity is a set of
conscious practices that involve:

 Understanding and appreciating interdependence of humanity, cultures, and the natural

environment.
 Practicing mutual respect for qualities and experiences that are different from our own.
 Understanding that diversity includes not only ways of being but also ways of knowing;
 Recognizing that personal, cultural, and institutionalized discrimination creates and
sustains privileges for some while creating and sustaining disadvantages for others;
 Building alliances across differences so that we can work together to eradicate all forms
of discrimination.
Diversity includes, therefore, knowing how to relate to those qualities and conditions that are
different from our own. Finally, we acknowledge that categories of difference are not always
fixed but also can be fluid, we respect individual rights to self-identification, and we recognize
that no one culture is intrinsically superior to another.
