CTNM 12
Negative Phase Sequence Current Relay

CTNM 12 is a negative phase sequence current relay which has

been designed primarily for the protection of three phase ac motors
against supply unbalances and single phasing.
The unbalances in voltage supply, which can occur because of
improper transposition of feeders, single phase loads etc. would
give rise to disproportionately large negative sequence currents.
The ratio of rotor ac resistance for negative sequence currents
to the dc resistance, which applies under normal condition, is
generally in the range of 3 to 6. Thus one unit of negative sequence
current will have a greater heating effect than one unit of positive
sequence current.
The relay is therefore designed to respond to such negative phase
sequence current and its setting is carefully chosen to avoid
unnecessary tripping of the motors under normal conditions and
to ensure positive operation during faulty conditions.
The relay has an adjustable time setting in steps.

component present is compared with the set
value in the level detector. If the level of negative
sequence current exceeds the set value, the
level detector gives an output.
