Compounding is the process of combining two words (free morphemes) to create

a new word (commonly a noun, verb, or adjective). Also called composition it is from
the Latin for "put together". Compounds are written sometimes as one word (sunglasses),
sometimes as two hyphenated words (life-threatening), and sometimes as two separate
words (football stadium).
Compounding is the most common type of word-formation in English.
Types of Compounds

Compounding exists in several different forms and parts of speech, including the
following:
 Compound Adjective
 Compound Adverb
 Compound Noun
 Compound Tense
 Compound Verb
 Exocentric Compound
 Rhyming Compound Root
 Compound and Synthetic Compound
 Suspended Compound

A compound adjective is formed when two or more adjectives are joined together to
modify the same noun. These terms should be hyphenated to avoid confusion or
ambiguity.
For example:
1.Diana submitted a 6-page document.
2.She adopted a two-year-old cat

A compound adverb is a construction in which one adverb is paired with another

adverb (or sometimes with another part of speech).
ex. Therefore, Sometimes

Compound nouns are words for people, animals, places, things, or ideas, made up of
two or more words. Most compound nouns are made with nouns that have been
modified by adjectives or other nouns.
ex. full moon, hairstyle

Compound tense is a traditional term for a verb construction that uses more than one
word to express a meaning related to time. A verb construction that uses only one word
is called a simple tense.
Ex. has read, have already eaten
A compound verb is made up of two or more words that function as a single verb.
Ex. brainwash, broke off

An exocentric compound is a compound construction that lacks a head word: that is,
the construction as a whole is not grammatically and/or semantically equivalent to
either of its parts. Also called a headless compound.
Ex. Egghead and blockhead, lowbrow and highbrow

Rhyming compounds Example: creepy-crawly,dilly-dally compounds or short phrases

with two rhyming words linked by a particle.

A root compound is a compound construction in which the head element is not derived
from a verb. Also called a primary compound or an analytic compound. Contrast with
synthetic compound.
Ex. hairnet, mosquito net

A synthetic compound is a type of compound that parallels a verbal construction, with

the head derived from a verb and the other element functioning as an object. Also
known as a verbal compound. Contrast with root compound.
Ex. dishwasher, taxi driver

A suspended compound is a set of compound nouns or compound adjectives in which

an element common to all members is not repeated. Also called suspensive
hyphenation.
Ex. five- and six-year-old ,three- or four-foot
