Description/content Automation and Control (AUT) is a three-semester Master's programme. A total of 90 ECTS
CPs must be acquired.

Our programme deals with the automatic control of complex industrial systemssuch as
production automation, power grids, robotics, e-mobility, or mechatronic systems in a possibly
networked environment. Real-time processing using embedded platforms forms the fundamental
design basis, also for safety and security considerations.
During your Master's studies here at TUK, you will gain deep knowledge in the areas of control
theory, modelling and identification, development of safe and secure systems, robotics and
mechatronic systems, and embedded and communication systems.

A key difference to many competitive programmes at other universities is thelarge degree of

freedom you will have regarding the selection of elective courses and projects. Besides taking
regular modules, you can also carry out specific projects, for instance, in cooperation with local
industry. In total, there is a high flexibility for you to create your own very personal profile during
your studies for your future in industry or academia.

The curriculum consists of a core programme, an elective programme, and a Master's thesis.

The compulsory subjects are:

Logic Control
2
Nonlinear and Adaptive Controlling
Digital Signal Processing
Robust Control
Mechatronic Systems
Lab Automation and Control
Methods of Soft-Control
Modelling and Identification
Seminar (with a selectable topic)

The elective part of the programme can contain the following elements:

A wide range of modules from the EIT department

Subject-related modules from other TUK departments
Individual projects, carried out either at a TUK chair or in industry

Master's Thesis
The last part of the curriculum is the Master's thesis. In general, the Master's thesis is embedded
into larger research projects conducted at TUK, at local research institutes, or in industry. The topic
of your Master's thesis will be determined during your second or third semester of studies.

You will create an individual study plan that summarises all elements together with your study
model adviser.

The University of Applied Sciences Esslingen, with its focuses on engineering studies, business studies, and social sciences, covers a wide
range of subjects. In October 2006, two historical universities were merged: the former "Königliche Bauwerkschule, Abteilung
Maschinenbau" (Royal School of Construction, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering), which had been relocated to Esslingen from Stuttgart in
11
1914, and the "Soziale Frauenschule des Schwäbischen Frauenvereins" (Social Women's School of the Swabian Women's Association),
founded in 1917. Both schools were elevated to the status of University of Applied Sciences in 1972.

Currently, around 5,700 students are enrolled in 11 faculties. They take courses on three campuses: the city centre campus lies in the heart
of Esslingen; the hilltop campus stands on a hill overlooking the city; and the Göppingen campus is situated 32 km away from Esslingen.

As a lively university, the University of Applied Sciences Esslingen is continually adapting to meet the demands of current practice in all its
fields of work. Because of this, the business studies and industry-oriented degree programmes foster intensive contact with many
important companies in south-western Germany and make use of a network that has been continually extended over the last 50 years. In
the densely populated region of Baden-Württemberg, there are also a large number of state-run and independent providers of health and
social care. For the degree programmes in health and social care and care sciences at the university, they offer excellent and extensively-
used opportunities for cooperative work in the areas of training, study, and research.

The central philosophy of the University of Applied Sciences Esslingen is to offer degree programmes that are practice-based but also
oriented towards the future. Manageable student numbers enable intensive study and cooperative relationships between staff and
students. Practical semesters, project work, group work, and scientific degree theses with a practical orientation are all aimed towards
successfully preparing the students for an academically sound, professional career.

Its excellent reputation and the quality of the scientifically and professionally grounded training have ensured that the University of
Applied Sciences Esslingen is regularly placed among the top universities in various university ranking schemes.

The University of Applied Sciences Esslingen endeavours to provide favourable work and study conditions for young parents. In an audit
carried out by the "Beruf- und Familie GmbH" (a non-profit organisation concerned with promoting family-oriented personnel and student
policies), the university was certified as a "family-friendly university".

The Graduate School was founded in 1999. International Master's programmes are organised here. A comprehensive service for students
from all parts of the world is guaranteed by the Graduate School.

University Location
A history of culture and technology

The history of Esslingen dates back to the year 777, when the town was first mentioned in an official document. Esslingen developed into an
important market town and in the 13th century was officially recognised by the Holy Roman Empire as a "Free City of the Empire". In the
Middle Ages, the great trade route from Holland to Venice crossed the Neckar River at Esslingen and proved a source of great wealth for the
medieval town. Consequently, Esslingen developed into a major trade centre and was especially famous for its wine. A walk through the
heart of the old town, one of the best-preserved of its kind in Germany, bears witness to Esslingen's 1,200-year history.

Esslingen is, however, more than just a romantic old town set in the middle of the vineyards of the Neckar Valley. Around 1830, it was the
most industrialised city in the kingdom of Württemberg, and to this day, Esslingen has remained a major centre for all kinds of engineering
and engineering-related industries. The region around Esslingen is home to some of the most famous corporations in the world of
business. This mixture of industry, trade, and culture is what gives Esslingen its special flair and forms the atmosphere in which the
University of Applied Sciences has flourished.

Description/content The ENB Elite Master of Science programme in Neuroengineering (MSNE) at the Technische
Universität München is a two-year graduate programme, with an optional Research Excellence
Certificate, hosted by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Center of
Competence on Neuroengineering. The programme is interdisciplinary and combines experimental
and theoretical neuroscience with profound training in engineering. Besides taking a series of
mandatory core courses, students will have the opportunity to choose from electives from multiple
disciplines and to gain research experience under the guidance of world-renowned faculty. The
programme aims to attract high-profile international students. It will provide a unique skill set that

14
will open up career possibilities beyond the conventional job market.

Course Details

Course organisation The programme is designed as a two-year full time (120 ECTS) Master of Science training, with an
optional Research Excellence Certificate (additional 30 ECTS). The curriculum is innovative in the
sense that all mandatory modules include hands-on implementation of acquired knowledge in
small team projects with close supervision to ensure that the students are able to apply the
relevant methods and techniques. Due to the interdisciplinary character, the mandatory modules
ensure that all aspects of the qualification profile (neuroscience, engineering, mathematics,
psychology, and informatics) are covered, while still leaving students the choice of the preferred
form of implementation during tutorials and labs. The Literature Seminar, Scientific Debating, and
Colloquium build a framework for the individual choice of a topic and related research papers,
strengthening students' abilities to identify relevant research, analyse the research, and write
about this research. Furthermore, the programme includes one or two individual research projects
(of 8 and 12 ECTS, respectively) during the semester breaks to enable students to perform
independent research early during their education.
We offer a mandatory set of core courses to cover all basic aspects of neuroengineering from brain
anatomy to neurorecording, electronics, and computational processing. Thereby, MSNE students
acquire a rich toolbox and a deep understanding of neuroengineering concepts, despite the
breadth of the field. The courses are conducted in a way that sets the framework for each topic
covered. During the tutorials and labs, students have the opportunity to focus on individual
problems as they work towards the individual qualification for research excellence. Students are
free to select remaining courses ("Learning Agreement"). The overall timeline is three semesters of
classes. This includes hands-on projects and intensive study projects during the semester breaks
(possibly abroad). The fourth semester is dedicated to the mandatory Master's thesis.

Costs of living Naturally, the cost of living in Munich depends on your needs and your lifestyle. Compared to
other German cities, however, living in Munich is relatively expensive. As a rule, you can expect
to spend 1,000 EUR a month. Most of this will be for rent.

Average costs per person:

i) Rent for shared living or studio apartment (including utilities) at least 550 EUR
ii) Food at least 200 EUR
iii) Local public transit 60 to 100 EUR
iv) Health insurance 50 to 120 EUR
v) Phone/Internet/radio and TV fees 45 EUR

If you are bringing your domestic partner or family to Munich, the costs will increase
accordingly. Rent for a two-bedroom apartment ranges from 800 to 1200 EUR a month. A
cheaper alternative to the private rental market is living in a student dormitory at the Munich
student union. However, rooms in student dormitories are very popular and there are usually
long waiting lists.

Description/content Energy and Environmental Management has two fields of specialisation: "industrialised countries"
and "developing countries" (formerly SESAM).

The specialisation "developing countries" is made up of three subject areas:

Renewable energy and energy efficiency

Energy management and project management
Energy systems and energy planning

A preparation semester qualifies all EEM students in economics, and it add competences in
research methods and German language.

The compulsory modules "Sustainable Energy Systems" and "Environmental Economics" are
20
offered for students of both study branches. They deliver basic knowledge and understanding of
the macroeconomic interrelation of environmental and energy-related problems. All other
modules are tailor-made for the students of the two branches.
Basic skills in planning and overseeing of development projects are taught in two compulsory
modules on "Project Management in International Development Cooperation" and "Diversity
Management in International Development Cooperation". An optional module on "International
Organisations and Development Strategies" allows students to specialise.

During the course of studies, students can choose between modules on "Sustainable Energy
Systems", "Trading Energy", "External Costs of Energy" and "Energy and Environmental Policy" as
electives.

In the subject area of engineering, students have to pass two compulsory modules on energy
planning: "Sustainable Energy Planning in Rural Areas" and "Applied Informatics in Energy
Planning".

Students have to select two further engineering modules from among the three modules
"Renewable Energy I", "Renewable Energy II" and "Rational Use of Energy". These modules use
problem-based learning as an educational model, which allows students to specialise according to
their individual interests and the needs of their home countries.

After successful completion of all modules, students take part in an "international class", a five-
week, project-oriented field research abroad. The "international class" allows students to work in a
multidisciplinary team on a development-oriented problem of sustainable energy use. It allows
students to apply their knowledge in engineering, economics and social sciences and thereby
deepen their methodological skills in planning sustainable energy systems.

The "international class" also prepares students for the challenges of their three-month, individual
field research, which provides the basis for their Master's theses. Finally, the Master's thesis can be
based on and supplemented with an internship, and is most often carried out in cooperation with a
host institution in the students' home countries.

Europa-Universität Flensburg
Situated in the German-Danish border region, Germany's northernmost university is a young university. Founded in 1946 by the British, it
was awarded university status in 2000. Since 2014, it has been known as "Europa-Universität". With around 6,000 students, it is a
comparatively small university. The main study programmes focus on educational science and international management as well as on
environmental sciences / sustainable development and interdisciplinary European studies.

The programme "Energy and Environmental Management" is part of the Interdisciplinary Institute of Environmental, Social and Human
Studies and is conducted in close cooperation with the second University in Flensburg, the University of Applied Sciences.

The location in the border region is ideal for a university with a mission to live the European dream of intercultural encounters and explore
its reality. For over 25 years, Europa-Universität Flensburg and Danish Syddansk Universitet have been working closely together. Their
double degree courses in economics offer students the opportunity to obtain degrees from both universities simultaneously.

The region is characterised by beaches, wind, and the sea. Situated directly on the fjord, with its impressive old buildings, low rent, a lively
cultural scene, and close proximity to Scandinavia, Flensburg offers excellent living and studying conditions.

24
University Location
The city of Flensburg is characterised by its waterside location and by the immediate proximity of its neighbouring country, Denmark.
Located at the northernmost point in Germany, the city of Flensburg is the gateway to Scandinavia. It is only a few miles drive to the Danish
border; the Kingdom of Denmark is located even closer to Flensburg than Husum or Kiel, and it can actually be seen from the beach at
Wassersleben.
The campus is located about two kilometres from the city centre. Approximately one in ten residents of Flensburg is enrolled at Europa-
Universität Flensburg or at the University of Applied Sciences. This is particularly noticeable during the summer months, when there is a
lively atmosphere in this university town. As soon as the cold days are over and the last lectures have ended, students meet at the beach or
at the place to be in the harbour, the "Hafenspitze".
Whether it's the reflecting water, the sail boats rocking gently in the waves, the sunset, or the fact that there is always someone you know -
everyone likes the heart of Flensburg.
Away from the water, Flensburg's historical city centre and its identity, developed over many centuries, is one of the landmarks of the city.
Spared attacks in times of war, Art Nouveau style houses and old villas can be found everywhere in the city. Its small streets are home to
cafés, numerous courtyards, rum producers, a wide pedestrian zone, harbour pubs, and several beaches.

Description/content Programme

Advanced Materials and Processes (MAP) is a combination of Materials Science and Engineering
with Chemical and Biological Engineering. These disciplines play a key role in the development of
novel technologies – without new materials, a great range of key inventions from digital computers
or jet engines to customised medical implants would not have been possible. Novel materials with
new functionalities or improved properties, however, require specifically designed, economically
and environmentally sustainable production processes – which might themselves depend on the
development of new catalyst materials. This intimate connection between processes and materials
32
is of key importance for advances and innovations in virtually any field of technology. Chemical
and Biological Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering are thus highly intertwined
fields, which are, however, traditionally treated as separate subjects.
MAP is an English-taught, interdisciplinary Master’s programme and provides a unique curriculum
for the next generation of engineers. Students follow an individually tailored curriculum to learn
the fundamentals of Chemical and Biological Engineering and/or Materials Science and
Engineering in small groups. Four focal subjects allow the students to further deepen their
knowledge in key technological areas:

Advanced Processes
Biomaterials and Bioprocessing
Computational Materials Science and Process Simulation
Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology

MAP is a highly-selective, accredited, two-year Master’s programme and part of theElite Network of
Bavaria (ENB). It is characterised by a very low student-to-faculty ratio, early involvement in
cutting-edge research through mini-projects and literature reviews, special events such as summer
schools and workshops (as well as events organised by the ENB), the availability of educational
grants, and personal support from the MAP team. Furthermore, students can gain additional
qualifications for an academic career or for a career in industry through specialised modules with
extra credits. A high percentage of MAP graduates continue to pursue a PhD, but MAP graduates are
also highly sought after by industry, with typical destinations including the automotive, aerospace,
oil and gas, food technology, health and safety, and pharmaceutical sectors.

Scientific Environment

MAP is embedded in the Faculty of Engineering of the FAU and is greatly enriched by the direct
involvement of the partner universities of Bayreuth and Würzburg. Local research centres such as
the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems and Device Technology (IISB), the Max Planck
Institute for the Science of Light, the Helmholtz Institute for Renewable Energy Production (HI-
ERN), the Institute of Advanced Materials and Processes (ZMP), the Neue Materialien Fürth GmbH
(NMF), the Erlangen Catalysis Resource Center (ECRC), and Energy Campus Nürnberg complement
the unique research environment in materials and processes.

Course Details

Course organisation Programme Structure

The core MAP programme is designed as a four-semester Master's course with the following general
structure and semester content. Optional additional qualifications provide the opportunity to gain
competences with a focus on research or industry. These additional qualifications consist of
courses with a total of 30 ECTS points and will be certified on your final academic transcript.

The content of the individual semesters is described in detail on theMAP website.

The structure of MAP combines core knowledge in Materials Science and Engineering as well as
Chemical and Biological Engineering with more advanced courses in the four focal topics. The core
knowledge is taught via "Fundamentals" lectures, while the focal topics are introduced via "Basics"
lectures to provide an overview of the subjects. Each student specialises in two out of four focal
topics. The curriculum is complemented by soft skills, scientific skills, and a mini-project, in which
students gain first-hand experience with research at the involved institutes. The programme ends
with a Master's thesis as an independent research project.

Added value of the English language elite MSc Advanced Materials and Processes

The international, English language elite course “Advanced Materials and Processes” uniquely
combines content from Materials Sciences and Chemistry and Bioengineering, thus placing it within
the FAU’s research focus on “New Materials and Processes”. In addition to the interdisciplinary
nature, the English language, the competitive selection process, the individually tailored curricula,
the mentoring, and the soft skill courses, innovative teaching concepts and early active
involvement in research combine to form a unique study experience. Furthermore, through the
partnership with the Universität Bayreuth and the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg as well

33
as the active membership in the Elite Network of Bavaria, MAP is thoroughly embedded in the
regional academic network.

Accommodation The cities of Erlangen, Fürth, and Nuremberg offer a very good standard of living. They are popular
places to live, meaning that accommodation is in high demand but often in short supply. This is
particularly the case during the period before the start of a new semester. We therefore
recommend that you start looking for accommodation as soon as possible. If you are flexible and
also look in the surrounding area, you will have a better chance of finding somewhere affordable to
live. The region has an excellent public transport system, so you should not have any problems
getting to your place of study or work.

It is worth checking the accommodation available on the Internet every day, as new
accommodation becomes available on a day-to-day basis. It pays to be flexible when it comes to
the price, location, and available facilities of your accommodation.

also strikes the perfect balance between a theoretical approach and practical application.

FAU’s outstanding research and teaching is reflected in top positions in bothnational and international rankings as well as the high
amount of DFG funding that its researchers are able to secure.

University Location
FAU’s two main sites, the cities of Erlangen and Nuremberg, are located at the heart of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. Both Erlangen,
a city of 100,000 inhabitants that was the former home of the Huguenots and is a key location for Siemens, and Nuremberg, a city with a
metropolitan flair and a population of half a million, have their own unique charms. The opera, theatre, and museums, along with a lively
pub scene and night life, offer plenty of opportunities to relax after a day in the lecture theatre, lab, or library. The highlights of the cultural
calendar in Erlangen include the Hörkunstfestival (acoustic art festival), International Comic Salon, Figurentheater-Festival (puppet
theatre festival), Poetenfest (poetry festival), and the theatre and performance festival "ARENA… of the young arts". A wide range of
cultural institutions open their doors to visitors during the Blue Night in Nuremberg, and once every two years, the Long Night of Sciences
gives the public a chance to take a look inside research institutions in Erlangen, Nuremberg, and Fürth. In summary, the mixture of
academia, innovative companies, art, and culture makes the region the perfect place for creative minds. There is also plenty on offer for
keen athletes and nature lovers. Fränkische Schweiz, a paradise for climbers and walkers, is located to the north of Erlangen and is at FAU’s
doorstep. Water sports enthusiasts will love the Franconian Lakes with the university’s water sports centre located just south of
37
Nuremberg.

Description/content The future of information and communication technology (ICT) is driven by mobile and networked
embedded systems: tomorrow’s digital cities, Industry 4.0, cyber-physical systems (CPS) and the
Internet of Things (IoT) will all depend on embedded sensing of real-world phenomena, in-
situ computation, large-scale computation as well as automated information exchange and data
distribution using machine-to-machine (M2M) communications between local and distributed
control entities.

The "smart grid" is one example of an application for future embedded systems, as it uses real-time
sensing of the available renewable energy to determine where energy is to be routed across the
power grid and controls intelligent machinery to increase production during peak times. This
requires that Internet-connected smart meters are installed in industrial plants and private homes
alike to facilitate real-time sensing and control of technical systems.

Another exciting area of application for embedded systems is mobile and wearable technology,
which allows users to access and manipulate information "on the go" as the system provides
relevant and timely information – indeed, this is one of the main purposes of mobile information
technology such as smartphones and tablet computers. Additional meaning for this Human-
Computer Interaction (HCI) is generated by the context of the device, the user, the location and
many more factors, all of which are sensed and computed by a plenitude of embedded sensors and
collocated or connected systems.
45
Wearable devices such as fitness trackers and smart watches collect bio-physiological and health-
related data to facilitate novel applications, including smart contact lenses and feedback systems
for the learning of physical activities. At the same time, increasing cross-device interoperability
means that users of head-mounted augmented reality and virtual reality displays can, for instance,
use the entire screen of a smartphone as a keyboard and have the typed text displayed on
augmented reality glasses.

Course Details

Course organisation This degree programme imparts the methodologies of computer science, electrical engineering,
information technology, and additional subject areas essential for designing mobile and
embedded systems, such as electronics, instrumentation, control engineering, and sensor
technology. You will also receive in-depth training in human-computer interaction, enabling you to
adopt the user's perspective when designing systems and to take into account usability and user
needs – crucial factors for the social acceptance of technological innovations – throughout all
stages of the design process.

The programme is divided into three module groups with core and elective modules. These include
the following:

Human-Computer Interaction
Systems Engineering
Data Processing, Signals and Systems

In addition to learning about advanced technologies in the specialisation module group, you will
choose modules from all three module groups, which allows you either to narrow the focus or
widen the scope of your studies. Courses offered by the Centre for Careers and Competencies will
help you to establish a well-rounded skills profile. Moreover, you may complement your studies
with a research internship, in which you will apply your skills to a highly innovative project. Finally,
you will write a Master's thesis as part of this programme.

Types of assessment Courses and seminars operate on the assumption that students will do a good deal of preparation
and follow-up work outside the classroom, with support from the respective lecturers but
nevertheless conducted independently.

Modules are assessed during or at the end of each semester. European Credit Transfer and
Accumulation System (ECTS) credits are awarded when the respective module has been passed
and the required coursework submitted. Assessments and coursework are usually graded. The
forms of assessment include written and oral examinations, student presentations and written
reports, essays and papers or a combination of the above. A Master's thesis must be written as part
of the programme.

The final grade for the programme is the average mark of all graded modules.

The University of Passau

Some 13,000 students from more than 100 countries are currently studying towards their degrees on our bright, modern campus next to
the Inn River and a stone's throw from the town centre and the historical Old Town.

The four faculties of the University offer degrees at the undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral levels. Currently, five Master’s programmes –
MSc Computational Mathematics, MSc Computer Science, MA Development Studies, MSc International Economics and Business and MSc
Mobile and Embedded Systems – can be studied entirely in English.

A cosmopolitan university

50
No other Bavarian university has more of its students spending part of their programme abroad – to study, conduct research or gain work
experience – than the University of Passau.

The range and depth of language tuition offered by ourLanguage Centre probably has a role to play in this. Another reason is that our
programmes are very international in their outlook – and with more than 200 international partner universities to choose from, it is difficult
not to be tempted to go abroad for a semester or two or even to complete one of our 20 double degree programmes offered in co-
operation with our global partner universities.

An unparalleled student experience

Passau’s students benefit from a good staff-to-student ratio and from studying on an urban campus of manageable size that is located very
close to the town centre.

The facilities on campus are of a high standard: There are bright, sunny seminar rooms, lecture theatres equipped with the latest
technology, numerous computer rooms, Wi-Fi access exists throughout the campus, and our well-stocked university library stays open
until midnight on most days.

Student satisfaction at the University of Passau is particularly high and our sought-after graduates typically occupy executive posts in
business, social, and academic organisations in Germany, Europe, and indeed all over the world.

Student life

Throughout the semester, there are plenty of events of all sorts on campus and around town, often organised by our very activestudent
societies. The Sports Centre has some 40 sports clubs, including acrobatics, climbing, rowing and yoga.

University Location
An ideal student town

Passau is situated near the Bavarian Forest at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, and it is considered one of the most beautiful
cities in Germany. After two fires that destroyed much of the town in the 17th century, the Old Town was rebuilt in the baroque style by
Italian master builders, which is why you will notice a distinct Italian flair as you stroll through "Bavarian Venice", another name by which
Passau is known.

With students accounting for one-quarter of its population, Passau is very much a student town with many galleries, art studios, bars,
cafés, clubs and, of course, beer gardens; naturally, there is a modern multiplex cinema. A shopping centre and the nearby pedestrian zone
offer a lot of excellent eateries and shops, just a short five-minute walk from campus.

Passau is home to a number of cultural institutions, such as the theatre and the "Scharfrichterhaus" – a restaurant, cinema and political
cabaret/stand-up stage where many of Germany’s most popular contemporary comedians started out. Both have productions and acts
running throughout the year.

In addition to this, Passau plays host to numerous annual cultural events, including "Europäische Wochen Passau" – a cultural festival
which brings international symphonic orchestras, classical ensembles, theatre companies and artists to Passau for about six weeks every
year; the Eulenspiegel Festival with predominantly German comedy acts and rock bands; two Oktoberfest-style festivals in spring and
autumn; and no list of festivals would be complete without the traditional Christmas Market in front of St. Stephen’s Cathedral every
December. Incidentally, did you know that St. Stephen's has the world's largest cathedral organ?

Outdoor enthusiasts will be delighted at the many opportunities for hiking, climbing, cycling, and alpine and cross-country skiing in the
nearby Bavarian Forest. Additionally, Passau is not far from the Austrian and Bavarian Alps, with their famous skiing areas as well as their
mountain biking and hiking trails.

Description/content Software is the driving fabric behind many of the technological advances that enrich our everyday
lives at home, at work and in public. More and more important tasks in government
administration, industrial production, health care, public transport, etc., are put into the "digital
hands" of mobile and networked computer systems. The underlying software must be extremely
reliable and constructed according to the highest standards.
The Master's degree programme in International Software Systems Science enables you to
specialise in all tasks required for analysing, designing and developing large, networked software
systems with innovative methods. The programme is informed by current trends in industry and
research, and relays advanced knowledge on the architecture, development and analysis of
modern software by teaching state-of-the-art techniques and methods in complex software
engineering for functionally predictable and secure distributed and mobile software systems.
The Master's degree programme imparts a broad variety of expert foundational knowledge and
helps you gain insights into several application domains. Regarding foundations, the modules
cover advanced software engineering methods, state-of-the-art networked, distributed and mobile
software technologies, privacy and security, as well as novel techniques for analysing and verifying
complex software. The application domains dealt with in the programme range from IT
management, energy-efficient systems, smart environments, human-computer interaction and
cognitive systems to computing in the cultural sciences and social networks.
We offer a large number of elective modules so that you can individualise your studies according to

53

rely on getting a job when budgeting for their stay.

Accommodation Bamberg's housing market has changed considerably in recent years. The demand for private
accommodations is quite high and rent prices continue to increase. The common trend seen in
many cities, and particularly in university cities, is now quite apparent in Bamberg, too.

56
It is thus advisable to begin looking for a flatas early as possible and to be patient, as the process
can take quite a while. It also pays to check listings in the local newspaper (Fränkischer Tag),
submit an announcement that you are looking for accommodation, or explore the numerous
online housing portals.

© Bernd Deschauer/Universität Bamberg

Since the founding of the University of Bamberg in 1647, it is the people who have been its top priority. The close proximity of students and
instructors provides for excellent advisory services, personal communication and interdisciplinary studies.

The University of Bamberg, with about 13,000 students, is among Germany‘s medium-sized universities. The university currently offers
roughly 100 programmes at the Bachelor‘s and Master‘s level.

The university’s main areas of academic focus lie in the humanities, social sciences, economics, business administration and human
sciences. These are rounded out by numerous programmes in application-oriented computer science. The premises of the four faculties
are concentrated in three main locations that are easily reached by bicycle or via the local network of bus routes.

One of the University of Bamberg’s main strengths is its commitment to a focus on international studies. The university’s International

57
Office maintains exchange programmes with approximately 300 universities in nearly 60 countries worldwide.

There are currently about 1,000 foreign students from 80 countries enrolled at the University of Bamberg. The range of courses offered at
the university reflects this focus on international studies. Degree programmes in fields like international business administration and
management, European economic studies, or the joint Master’s degree in English and American Studies all require that students spend up
to one year studying abroad. Furthermore, international students receive a great deal of support outside the classroom.

In order to help visiting students from around the globe become better integrated and acquainted with daily life, the International Office
organises a tandem programme that brings together local and foreign students.

The university’s international guests also have the opportunity to participate in an extensive programme of excursions and events meant
to present a broader experience of life in Germany, even beyond the city of Bamberg. An international "Stammtisch" provides students with
the opportunity to socialise and share experiences.

For more information, see: www.uni-bamberg.de/en/university/profile/.

University Location
Located in Northern Bavaria, it is easy to travel to and from Bamberg using many different means of transport. For those travelling by car,
the city can be reached from all directions via the A70 and A73 motorways. Bamberg's railway station is also a stop on the ICE line between
Munich and Berlin, which means that both cities can be reached without changing trains. Nuremberg, Bavaria's second largest city, is
approximately 45 minutes away by train, and its international airport provides flights to destinations worldwide. For more information,

Description/content Maintaining a permanent supply of water and energy is one of the great global challenges of our
time. As a result, the water-energy nexus, which reaches across various sectors, is becoming
increasingly important. Knowing the relationship between water and energy supply and
distribution (both pillars in sustainability), it is necessary to connect different scientific
perspectives. By considering complex interdependencies – detached from individual resources –
the water-energy nexus gains importance as a key element of sustainable development.

By offering the Master's course of study in Sustainable Management, RWTH Aachen University is
meeting the demand for interdisciplinary collaboration. The programme integrates disciplines
from energy, civil, and environmental engineering; geography; business and economics; and the
social sciences. Students gain specialised analysis, method, solution, and evaluation skills in the
fields of water and energy management. Furthermore, the course of study teaches interdisciplinary
skills, such as the ability to critically reflect on innovations in a global context and the ability to
work and research independently.

This technical breadth will allow graduates to face complex and global challenges in their
professional lives that are scientifically, technologically, and socially relevant. The programme
aims at qualifying a new generation of socially responsible engineers who will contribute to shaping
global, sustainable development.
