 When do you use the polite word ‘excuse me’?

I – FARE
Teacher: Children, let us meet someone new today!
The teacher brings in the parrot puppet.
Teacher: Children, say hello to ‘Polite Polly’.
The learners excitedly greet ‘Polite Polly’.
Teacher (as the parrot) (in a squeaky voice): Hello children!
Other teacher: Children, ‘Polite Polly’ has come to teach all of us about politeness.
Teacher (as the parrot): Children, I have been told that you all are aware of a few magic words.
Expected Response: Yes!
Teacher (as the parrot): That is wonderful! I will be teaching you all a new polite word. Let us see
what that is and to do that I would like to introduce Jay and Jia.
The Teacher and the other teacher perform the role play as Jay and Jia.
Teacher (as Jay): Hi Jia! How was your day?

1
Other teacher (as Jia): Hi Jay! I had a great day. My teacher gave me a star sticker today for being
polite.
Teacher (as Jay): What do you mean? How were you polite?
Other teacher (as Jia): I needed crayons for colouring so I said, “Excuse me Teacher, May I have my
crayons for colouring please?” The teacher was very happy to hear me use those polite words. So,
she said, “Yes Jia you may” and since she was happy with my politeness, she gave me a star.
Teacher (as Jay): That is wonderful. I know that we must use ‘please’ to request someone for
something. We say ‘thank you’ when someone does something nice for us. We use ‘may I?’ when
we need to ask for something. But when do we use ‘excuse me’?
Other teacher (as Jia): We must use ‘excuse me’ when we need to get someone’s attention but
that person is busy. You must say ‘excuse me’ to let them know that you would like to talk to
them.
Teacher (as Jay): Thank you so much Jia. You just taught me another wonderful magic word
‘excuse me’.
Teacher (as parrot): Children, excuse me is a polite expression that we can use in the following
situations:
 to interrupt someone politely
 you have to squeeze between two people having a conversation
 you burp or sneeze in the middle of a conversation.
 you have to yawn when you are listening to your friend.
 when you ask someone to move to go forward.
Teacher: Children, ‘Polite Polly’ just taught us a very important polite word.
The teacher asks the learners what would they say/do in the following situations/scenarios:
 Two children are sitting at a table coloring. One child needs a crayon that is out of his/her
reach. It is within the reach of the other child. What should the first child say to the other
child nearest the crayons?
 The teacher is giving directions and one child in the class has a question to ask about the
directions being given. What should that child do?
 The teacher is teaching and a child sneezes out loud. What should the child say?

The teacher reinforces the polite words with the following song.

I say “thank you”.
When my grandma gives me something,
I say “thank you”.
I can see it makes them happy
When I say it so politely
