Biodiversity Lab

Thomas Lam

Abstract
The amount of biodiversity in a 6ft x 6ft square was observed. A 6ft x 6ft square was drawn, and
it's contents were thoroughly examined and drawn. Various thing such as dead pine tree
needles, moss, and sticks were noted. From this, it was seen that there was a large amount of
biodiversity in the 6ft x 6ft square.

Problem: How much biodiversity is there in the 6ft x 6ft square (drawn outside)?

Hypothesis: There will be a large amount of biodiversity in the 6ft x 6ft square.

Experiment: A 6ft x 6ft square was drawn on the ground outdoors, and it's contents were
observed. In addition, a map of the area was drawn.

Results: Patches of moss, pinecones, dead branches, grass, pine needles, dead seeds, small
roots, and numerous ants were found inside the square. Above the square, leaves and
branches from a nearby tree covered a large portion (about 7/8) of the square with shade.

Conclusion: The 6ft x 6ft square contained a large amount of biodiversity.

Questions

1. What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of life on earth at all its levels, from genes to ecosystem, and the
ecological and evolutionary processes that sustain it.

2. Give an example of Biodiversity.

There are virtually countless life forms in the ocean. There are hundreds of types of sharks,
whales, and fish. Also, seaweed and coral can be found. Additionally, seashells that appear
frequently on beaches were once part of a marine organism. All these forms of life are a great
example of biodiversity.

3. Is Biodiversity important to an ecosystem? Why?

Yes. A large variety of life forms is essential to supporting an ecosystem. Each of these life
forms serve its purpose in the ecosystem. For example, bees make honey, sheep provide wool,
and fish provide a reliable food source.

4. What factor(s) affected your determination of Biodiversity?

Many factors such as the objects surrounding the square (the tree nearby), the current
weather/time of year, and human intervention affect determination of biodiversity.

5. Describe an example of biodiversity in your neighborhood.

There is plenty of biodiversity in our neighborhood. Not only are there people, but there are
also pets such as dogs, cats, fish, and others... even snakes. In addition, there is mainly grass,
trees, flowers, but gardens may contain other types of plants.
