MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY ACTIVITY

LECTURE NOTE:

Our third lesson in Media and Information Literacy is focused on one of the main components of
our subject which is Information Literacy. Information Literacy is comprised of a few elements, one of
which is being able to locate information. In that sense, today’s activity is about finding information and
being able to use it on a paper.

ACTIVITY:

1. Think of a topic from any lesson that you have had in your days as a Senior High School
student. It can be something as easy as Volcanoes and Earthquakes from Earth Science to
something as complex as the schools of thought in Philosophy. The topic you choose will be
your topic for this mini research activity.
2. You are going to write a two-page research paper about your assigned topic. Be guided by
the following questions:
a. What is the topic all about?
b. How is this related to you?
c. Are there any current news/issues related to your topic?
d. What else have you found about the topic? Anything interesting?
e. Do you like the topic? Do you agree with what it does or means?
3. Please note that your paper should have an INTRODUCTION, a BODY and a CONCLUSION.
4. As a little restriction, you are required to use the following materials for your paper:
a. At least two book sources
b. At least one journal
c. At least two online sources
5. Write your paper on a word document processor (ex. Microsoft Word, Google Docs, WPS,
etc.)
6. Follow the specified mechanics for your paper:
a. Times New Roman font style
b. 12 font size
c. 1.5 spacing for paragraphs (Make sure you REMOVE all spaces after paragraphs.)
d. Margins should be 1 inch on all sides of the paper.
e. The name and the section should be put on the top left part of the page. Like so:

Every semester, students will fill up libraries and will scour the internet for the
best research topic to use for their thesis paper….

JADE

(PLEASE READ THIS IN FRONT OF THE CLASS.)

Because of the library orientation done last Wednesday, we were not able to meet and do our
assigned activity for the day. I would give you the two activities that we were supposed to do for the
week but I will let you control how you’re going to plan on doing it.

ACTIVITY 1:

This is aligned with our second lesson, The Evolution of Media. What you are going to do is
you’re going to draw a political cartoon about what you think is the current state of media/press in the
Philippines. You can make it the same style as an editorial cartoon or you can do it in a poster. This
activity will be done on a short bond paper. At the back, you’re going to write a 3-5 sentences
explanation about what you did with the drawing. You can draw inspiration from the internet but please
keep in mind that originality is part of the criteria for this activity. You may submit the paper the paper
in our faculty room. Just put it in my desk. Thank you.

I acknowledge the fact that you will not be able to finish and submit both activities in one day. I will
allow you to work on the activity which you think will be done first. Just please make sure to follow the
deadline for the second activity as it will be used in our discussion next week. If ever you were not able
to finish the first activity, please tell your president to email me so I get a heads-up.
