Manipur Current Affairs – January 2019

PM inaugurated 12 projects worth over Rs. 1500 crore on his a day visit to Imphal, Manipur
On January 4, 2019, On the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi’s one day visit to Imphal, Manipur, he
inaugurated 12 projects worth over Rs. 1500 crore.
i. Addressing a public gathering, he inaugurated 12 projects consisting of eight key development projects
related to water supply and tourism and four schemes in Manipur. These include:
• An Integrated Check Post at Moreh, Imphal, at a cost of over Rs. 125 crore, that will facilitate
custom clearance, foreign currency exchange, immigration clearance etc,
• The Dolaithabi Barrage Project which completed at a total cost of Rs. 500 crore,
• the FCI Food Storage Godown at Sawombung that had begun in December 2016,
• He dedicated to the nation the 400 kV Double Circuit Silchar-Imphal Line that was made at a cost of
Rs. 700 crore.
• A buffer water reservoir at Ukhrul was mentioned which would be helping the citizens till 2035,
• He inaugurated improved and upgraded water supply for Churachandpur zone which will help the
citizens till 2031,
• Eco-tourism complex at Thangapat in Kangpokpi district,
• Integrated tourist destination in Noney district and
• The water supply scheme at JNV, Lambui and its surrounding villages
• Infrastructure development of Dhanamanjuri University in Imphal West district,
• Flood lighting of hockey stadium and the main stadium at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in
Imphal East district and
• AstroTurf laying in Langjing Achouba of Imphal West district.
ii. He acknowledged the better road rail and air connectivity that is being provided to the North East, with the
overall vision of “Transformation through Transportation.”
iii. He also acknowledged Manipur’s contribution in Swachh Bharat, sanitation, and development of the
aspirational district of Chandel.
iv. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed Vijay Samkalp Samavesh at Silchar in Southern Assam. This
was his first visit to Barak Valley as Prime Minister.
Other News:
The Prime Minister has travelled to the North-East 30 times in the last 4.5 years.

Maharashtra government committed to double farmers’ income by 2022: Chief Minister Devendra
Fadnavis
On January 14, 2019, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reaffirmed the state government’s
commitment towards doubling farmers income by 2022.
i. According to his announcement,The government has approved Rs 24,000 crore worth loan waiver for the
state’s 51 lakh farmers holding bank accounts,
ii. It had also made available more than Rs 10,000 crore fund through budget in the current fiscal for
implementation of various schemes,
iii. Rs 15,240 crore worth compensation were distributed to farmers whose crops were damaged by natural
calamity.He also mentioned about the government’s Jalyukta Shivar water conservation scheme.
iv. Rs 34,000 crore was given for upgrading the dams in the state.

Centre reconstitutes tribunal to adjudicate ban imposed on 8 Manipur insurgent groups


On 24th January 2019, The Central government reconstituted a tribunal headed by Delhi High Court
Judge Justice G.S. Sistani for another 5 years to adjudicate the extension of ban imposed on the eight
insurgent groups in Manipur which were involved in 756 violent and unlawful incidents in the last five years.

i. The Tribunal had been set up under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 and the tribunal will
adjudicate whether there is sufficient cause for declaring these insurgent groups of Manipur as “Unlawful
Associations”.
ii. Earlier, a tribunal headed by Delhi High Court Judge Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal was set up
on 12th December 2018 but Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal left the tribunal.

15-year old Wahengbam Lamnganba Singh from Manipur, selected by Indian Council for Child Welfare
(ICCW) for receiving National Bravery Award
On January 3, 2019, 15-year-old class IXth student, Wahengbam Lamnganba Singh, of Kumbi area
in Manipur, has been selected by the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) for receiving National
Bravery Award.
He will be honoured because he had saved his two and half year’s old cousin from drowning in a pond, on May
16, 2018.
i. He would receive the award from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi.
ii. The National Bravery Awards are given under the aegis of the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) on
every Republic Day.
iii. These awards are broadly classified into five categories, including the Bharat Award, Sanjay Chopra
Award, Geeta Chopra Award, Bapu Gaidhani Award and the General National Bravery Awards.

Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura celebrating statehood day


On January 21, 2019,Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura are celebrating their statehood day.It is their 47th
statehood day.
Keys points to be noted
i. In the year 1972, all the three states became full-fledged states under the North Eastern Region
(Reorganisation) Act, 1971.
ii. The erstwhile princely states of Tripura and Manipur were merged with Indian Union in October 1949 and
became full-fledged states in 1972
iii. Meghalaya was a part of Assam before it was carved out as a full-fledged state under the North Eastern
Region (Re-Organisation) Act, 1971.In Meghalaya, a week-long programme on the theme, ‘Celebrating
Meghalaya-India’, on the occasion of the 47th Statehood Day and the 70th Republic Day began on Monday in
different districts.

National Foundation for Communal Harmony organized a special workshop under Know My India
Programme held in Bengaluru
On 4th February 2019, On the lines of Know My India Programme,the National Foundation for Communal
Harmony (NFCH), organized a special workshop for 42 Youth in the age group of 15 to 22 years, who has
suffered communal violence.The Youths Participated in the Programme belongs to Jammu & Kashmir, Manipur,
Assam, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Gujarat along with 10 official mentors.
Key points
i. The programme was organized by the Art of Living Foundation.
ii. Youth interacted with Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a spiritual leader.
iii. The participants were taught various body-breath mechanisms and practical tools of wisdom.The main
exercise included the powerful rhythmic breathing practice called Sudarshan Kriya, whose regular practice is
known to significantly reduce stress hormones, improve the clarity of mind and increase one’s happiness
quotient.

i. It is a unique programme initiated by the NFCH to bring together financially assisted children of the
foundation from different states and regions of the country to promote oneness, fraternity and national

Phayeng Village of Manipur tagged as India’s first carbon-positive settlement
On 1st April 2019, Phayeng, a scheduled caste village of the Chakpa community in Imphal West
district of Manipur has been tagged as India’s first carbon-positive settlement.
Key Points:
i. The village is surrounded by three densely forested hillocks with fruit trees at centre and a stream flowing
through it.
ii. Also, it has been revived from the dry and denuded village through the sheer determination of its residents
and funding under National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change (NAFCC), which is a central scheme
launched in 2015-16 to support adaptation for climate change impact in various states.

Former minister of Manipur Holkhomang Haokip passed away


Holkhomang Haokip, veteran politician and former minister of Manipur passed away on 8th April
2019.Holkhomang Haokip was a leader of the Kuki community (of North-east India) and being elected to
the 13th Lok Sabha (in 1999). He was a former member of Parliament. He hailed from Kamjong District of
Manipur.
i. Holkhomang Haokip was the son of freedom fighter Chunglet Haokip of the (INA) Indian National Army.
ii. Previously, in 1972, he was elected to the Manipur Assembly and became the minister of Manipur for
education and tribal welfare.
iii. Haokip was appointed as the deputy chairman of the State Planning Board in 1980.
iv. From 1981 to 1984, Haokip was a cabinet minister of industries, planning and transport. From 1989 to
1992he was the industry minister and from 1992 to 1995, the power Minister.

New medicinal plants of Zeliangrong ethnic group discovered in Manipur
New medicinal plants of Zeliangrong ethnic group were found in Manipur by the research team from North
Eastern Regional Institute of Sciences and Technology, Arunachal Pradesh. This study was published in
the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. The lead author of the study was Robert Panmei and the members were
P. R. Gajurela and B. Singh.
Key Points:
i. Zeliangrong ethnic group is one of the 32 tribes in Manipur, living in the Tamenglong district. It comprises of
three groups namely Zeme, Liangmai and Rongmei which are collectively known as Zeliangrong.
ii. 27 healers of the Zeliangrong ethnic group were examined and the researchers documented 145 medicinal
plants for treating 59 ailments.
iii. Scientists identified plants like Gynura cusimbua, Hedyotis scandens, Mussaenda glabra, and Schima
wallichii whose medicinal usage was reported for the first time.
iv. The study was conducted with the consent of the community as per the code of ethics of the International
Society of Ethnobiology (ISE).

Manipur youth inducted into Facebook ‘Hall of Fame’ for discovering Whatsapp bug
A 22-year-old civil engineer, Zonel Sougaijam from Imphal east of Manipur was recognized by the social
media giant “Facebook” for discovering and reporting a WhatsApp bug that violated the privacy of a user.
Key Highlights:
i. Zonel Sougaijam was rewarded $5000 and also inducted into the Facebook ‘Hall of Fame’2019.
ii. Now he is at the 16th position in a rundown of 94 people in the 'Facebook Hall of Fame' 2019.
iii. The bug bounty program of Facebook where the user can report critical bugs which violates the privacy of
its users.

PB Acharya sworn in as the Governor of Manipur


On June 27, 2019, Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya was sworn in as the Governor of Manipur. Justice
Lanusungkum Jamir of the High Court of Manipur administered the swearing in ceremony at the Darbar Hall of
the Raj Bhavan, Imphal in the presence of Chief Minister of the state N Biren Singh, his cabinet colleagues,
Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), top civil and police officers.
i. He is given the additional charge as the Governor of Manipur, in addition to his own duties as the Governor of
Nagaland in the absence (on leave) of Dr Najma Heptulla, Governor of Manipur.
