Station 0

Hi Campers! Welcome to this year’s race. We all know that this year’s theme of the Sci-Math camp is “Math
and Science: A Collaborative Agent in Providing Solutions for Pressing Global Issues. And for sure you were all
familiar of the Great Pacific Patch and how it has greatly devastated the Pacific ocean and the aquatic creatures
inhabiting it. So today, we will test in how keen and capable are you in providing solutions for the pressing issues
relating to environmental care and protection.

The Earth, as we all know is a perfect home to all living things which includes the human beings, animals
and plants. However, at present, Mother Earth has faced a great deal of environmental issues that caused
unpredictable changes in our climate, depletion of the ozonelayer, greenhouse effect and many more. Thus, it is
obvious that the future of the Earth’s well-being lies in the activities of the human kind.

1st Station: Save Mother Earth

The first station will test your unity, teamwork and creativity in how keen and capable you are in protecting
and caring our Mother Earth despite the many challenges that may confront you.

But before you can do the first challenge, you will have to solve a problem.Once you are able to solve the
problem correctly, you have to show your answer to your station manager stationed at the parking lot, at the right
side of the covered court. He/she will give you a signal when to start the challenge.

Your goal in this challenge is to carry the earth to its destination as a team. Every member of the team
should help protecting the earth and not to let it fall on the ground otherwise you have to go back to the starting
point. Not following instructions would disqualify your team to proceed to the next station.

1st Station: Save Mother Earth

Welcome to the first station!

Our Earth is the most beautiful planet in the solar system. But hey, our mother Earth is currently facing a lot of
environmental concerns. The environmental problems like global warming, acid rain, all forms of pollution makes
our Mother Earth in great danger.

Problem:

Solve the following problems about function. Decipher the word that can be formed out of those answers.
A. 6
1 . f ( 2 )=2 x +5
B. -19
2 and 7 . f (−3 )=−2 x−3 C. 3
3. f ( 4 ) =x2−3 x + 4 D. 4
E. 9
4. f (−5 )=2 x 2−4 x+11
I. 1/2

Instruction for team manager:

2nd Station: Bottle up!

Congratulations for having successfully completed the first challenge!

Don’t you know that plastic wastes take several years to be decomposed? Since they take several years to
be decomposed, they are stuck to our canals and drainages for years which then cause perennial flooding to our
cities. So your next challenge would test how strategic and patient are you in dealing with these plastic
wastesknowing that these plastic bottles are one the main contributors to these kind of wastes.

You will be heading to a place where everyone usually walks and passes when going to the elementary
department.

Instructions:

There are 5 tipped-over plastics bottles filled with water. Your goal is to put those5 bottlesin an upright position
using a meter stick with a ring attached to it. You have to position the ring at itsbottleneck to make them stand. You
are only allowed to hold the meter stick and not the string. Remember NOT TO TOUCH the string anywhere. You are
only given 10 tries per chance.

But wait! Once you have reached 10 tries and did not successfully put all the bottles in their upright position, you
have to fall in line again and wait for your next chance for another set of 10 tries. Every bottle successfully raised
will be granted to the group. Resume the task until you have successfully put the rest of thebottles in their upright
position before you can advance to the next station.

WARNING:Make sure the meter won’t break. So be very extra careful not to break the meter stick! Once the meter
stick has been accidentally broken, your group will have to wait for the last group to finish the task before you can
have another chance. Meaning, it will take FOREVER for your group to wait to be given another chance to resume to
the challenge. Have fun in exercising your patience guys. Good luck!!!

3rd Station: Conservation of Resources

Don’t you know that 1.4 billion pounds of trash end up in our beautiful oceans? And guess what? Majority
of these wastes come from plastics.

Since those huge amount of plastic wastes are dumped to different bodies of water such as the seas, oceans, lakes
and rivers which could greatly affect the marine animals and other marine resources. Those plastic wastes are
eventually eaten by small and big fish as they are weathered and turn into small pieces. Unfortunately, these
plastics enter the digestive system of our favorite fish.

Instruction:

You will be given the following materials: fish, liter of water, salt, charcoal and chicken wire. But before you
can get these items you need to solve the problem given and show your answer to your team manager. Your goal is
to roast a fish using the materials provided for you. You cannot use materials more than what is given to you. You
cannot ask for more materials such as water, salt, charcoal and etc.

4th Station: Trash Mining

The best way to reduce or eliminate the amount of trash in our landfills is to recycle all glass, plastics, papers, and
aluminium products. 80% of the trash that can be found in our landfills is recyclable. This is a staggering number
that can be drastically decreased if more people made recycling a part of their everyday life.

Instruction:

Welcome to the next station!

You will be mining trashes from a pool filled with biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes. You will be given
STRICTLY two minutesto mine those wastes using a picking tool provided for you. Each member of the group MUST
take turns in picking the trashes. Then, those trashes you have mined from the pool will be sorted as biodegradable
and non-biodegradable and will be placed in the small bins provided for you. If your given time ends and your non-
biodegradable bin is not yet fully – filled then you have to line up again and wait for your turn. Non-compliance will
disqualify you for the next challenge, Good luck!

5th Station: Eco-brick: The Plastic solution

Don’t you know that we can change the world with one bottle brick at a time?

One of the practical ways to effectively reduce the harmful consequences of plastic wastes to our environment is
for us to take part in the practice of the 3 R’s rule: reuse, reduce and recycle. With the help of wise, practical and
innovative way of reusing, reducing and recycling those plastics, we can potentially minimize its harmful effects to
our Mother Earth. So, let us utilize an innovative use of out of those by making those useful bottle bricks.

Eco-bricks are plastic bottles stuffed with plastic wastes which is used as an alternative for regular bricks or hollow
blocks. Some eco-bricks have already been used to efficiently build houses and other structures.

Instruction:

Congratulations! You are about to finish the race…

You are given 5 pieces of 1-L plastic bottles to stuff with the plastic wastes with what you have gathered from the
4th station and with what has been given to you. Take note that an important requirement for this station is to stuff
those bottles with at least500 grams of plastic wastes leaving even no little space for air. So make sure that you
loaded the plastic bottles with at least 500 grams of plastics or else you will have to load the bottles again. Make
thoseeco-brick bottles as sturdy as you can. Good luck!

Note:Be sure that the plastic wastes useto load the bottles must be DRY!
