CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The speedy progression of the world's technology and globalization has played a
critical role not only to the way we live and interact but also to the way we teach and learn.
Technology in common knowledge is the application of knowledge in certain areas using
technical processes. One good example of this are, mobile phones. From the start to the
end of the day, mobile phones are involved in any of people’s activities, be it for
communication, for entertainment, or for sending and receiving information. However,
mobile phones are not much of a necessity, the internet. The internet is an electronic
communication network, responsible for virtual connection. It also enables virtual
communication to be possible. Internet also helps up access information on the world wide
web, easier. All the more, it is used for most people’s entertainment like games and music.

The Universidad de Manila, as the main setting of this research, states in its mission
and vision that it is one of its goals is the promotion of tertiary education for the
underprivileged students as beneficiaries of the city of Manila. One of the majorly favored
ways of effective education is E-learning, which refers to the utilization of modern
technology with the means of flexible education provided by easy access to the internet, it
is also known as the distance-learning. Surely, with the rapid advancement of Technology
and Globalization, there is a need for a new set of abilities for us to be able to catch up with
the use of enhancement of the skills being used by many in our schools and businesses.

The DepEd’s Bureau of Educational Assessment and a team from ACTC has begun
an online assessment to implement these said 21st Century Skills, by the participation of
Grade 8 students in Marikina, with the goal to know the advantage online and classroom-
based assessment approach. As known by most, the implementation of this kind of system
will surely benefit not only students but also companies looking for skilled future workers.
However, along with the benefits, there are also downsides, difficulties, and threats with
the use of Technology-based instructions for students. Technology-based instructions serve
as a guideline on how should as student obtain information about a topic with the aid of
technology and especially the internet. It'll be valuable to students because it's more
convenient and easier than researching manually in a library. But as said, as it is helpful
and simple, it doesn't mean that it will be problem-free. The difficulties encountered by
students with the use of these
instructions will be put to spotlight in this research to assess how they should manage these
predicaments they're experiencing and what is the most productive approach to solving this
kind of problem.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the difficulties encountered by Universidad de


Manila’s senior high school students with Technology based instructions which is
defined as their guide to provide basic information through the use of technology,
considering the frequency of their use and exposure to this during the school year
2019-2020.

Specifically it would like to answer the following:

•What are the most frequently used technologies and gadgets by students?
•What is the average time students spend in using gadgets?
•What becomes of the physical state of students exposed to technology?
•How does technology and gadgets affect a student’s social relationship?
•In what ways are students experience difficulties in technology based instructions?
•What kind of technical difficulties do students experience when using technology
and gadgets?
•How excessive use of technology benefits and threatens one’s mental health?
•How useful is technology to their school performance?
•Is elearning effective to students nowadays?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study is focused on the disadvantages brought by Technology Based


Instructions to 60 selected students from strands; ICT, ABM, HUMSS, STEM , HE,
AND GAS at Universidad de Manila Senior High School students. It includes their
different views and opinion when it comes to the use of technology based instructions.
This study will identify how students encounter such difficulties when it comes to
technology. This study will be conducted during the second semester at Universidad de
Manila, Manila City.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

To students,
The first recipients of this research are those students. It is maybe the way they can
determine the area in which they are experiencing difficulties and the different methods
to resolve the said problems.

To curriculum planners,
This can help curriculum planners when it comes to the students’ education set up.
They should be aware on what or how their plans can affect the students’ way of learning.

To the future researcher,


This study will help the future researcher, for it will serve as one of the possible
studies or literature which will contribute to the further improvement of their research.

To the City of Manila,


This will help them to clearly understand if the e-learning system helps their
boundaries in every school and also it can serve this as the basis to help public schools to
improve their new learning system.

To UDM,
This can serve as one of the basis to improve their new learning system with the help
of the e-learning system.

To Faculty,
This can improve their style of teaching in every classroom.

To Parents,
This study will help them to understand the new way of teaching in schools and will
help them to easily catch up with the flow of study of their child.

To Students,
This study will help them to determine what are the difficulties encountered by using
e-learning and it can also serve as their basis on their next research.

To Researcher,
This study will help them with how e-learning affects the productivity of the students
in the school and these will serve as their basis or connection to their research.

The speedy progression of globalization and the world's technology has played a
critical not only in the way we live and interact but also to the way we learn. Technology-
based instructions serve as a guideline on how should a student acquire knowledge and
obtain information necessary for their studies with the aid of technology and especially
the internet as it is more convenient and easier for the students especially in Senior high
school. E-learning is the use of the internet to enhance new knowledge in technology and
guide the students in using a new e-learning system. This study aims to determine the
Technology-based difficulties encountered by Universidad de Manila ICT 12 students
along with the possible means of resolving the disadvantages.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored with the study of Sheingold (1990) about the teachers
implementing e-learning in classroom he said “integrating technology in the
classroom is not about teaching students to operate computers, but integrating
technology is about helping teachers to use technology as a tool for learning”. This
was theory was supported by Fulton (1997) used technology fluency to describe the
changing definition of what students need to know about technology.
