Forgiveness

And [there is a share for] those who

came after them, saying, "Our Lord,
forgive us and our brothers who
preceded us in faith and put not in
our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have
believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful."
[59:10]

Dear brothers in Islam, the topic of today’s khutba is on forgiveness. As humans we are not
born with sins but we are born with weaknesses. We are prone to make mistakes and
transgress rights (haq) of others. These may be against Allah or against the people around us.
One of Allah’s names is Al-Ghaffar “The All-Forgiving” and He is the original source of all
forgiveness.

On the authority of Anas (ra) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say, “Allah the
Almighty has said: ‘O Son of Adam, as long as you invoke Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you
for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O Son of Adam, were your sins to reach the
clouds of the sky and you then asked forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you. O Son of Adam,
were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the Earth, and were you then to face Me,
ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it [too].’ ”[Tirmidhi]

But how do we ask for forgiveness? 1. The first step is to immediately stop the wrong act and
understand that what we did or said was wrong. 2.We must sincerely feel ashamed and
embarrassed by our wrong deed. This is called Tawba. 3.Finally when asking Allah for
repentance we promise not to do that deed again and strive to keep our promise. This is called
istighfar.

If this involved another person, then, in addition, it is our responsibility to ask that person for
forgiveness as well and try to rectify or fix the problem we caused. Because if they do not
forgive us then they will come to us on the Day of Judgement and take our good deeds. If we
have no more good deeds then they will give to us their bad deeds.

Allah loves those servants of his who repent. To emphasise Allah’s love for the repentance of
His servant, the Prophet (pbuh) said:, "Allah is happier about the repentance of one His slaves
than one of you would be about finding your camel which had strayed away from you in the
middle of the desert.Even though our Prophet Muhammad (saw) did not sin he showed us how
to ask Allah for forgiveness. Abu Hurayra said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say, 'By
Allah, I ask Allah's forgiveness and turn towards Him in repentance more than seventy times a
day."

Dear brothers in Islam. The Door of Repentance is open to all of us until the Day of Judgement.
In the Qur’an, Allah teaches us how to ask for forgiveness.

They said, "Our Lord, we

have wronged
ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will
surely be among the losers." [7:23]

Dear brothers in Islam, we are human and make mistakes. Constantly being angry and holding
grudges against each other does not help anyone except theShaytan. As Muslim brothers,
should support each other and cover each other’s faults rather than dwelling on them.
Forgiveness is an action that every Muslim should practice more often, it reduces tension,
strengthens brotherhood and helps us to develop mutual respect for one another.
