 Dangerous Places
India is one of the most populated countries in the world, boasting a
population of about 1.3 billion people. The high population, coupled with rising
unemployment, has led to a surge in crime and violence in the country. The
nature of crime and violence differ from one state to another with some of the
states recording higher crime rates than others. The ranking of the dangerous
states in India is based on the number of crime incidences reported to the police
by the people living in that state. The crime rate is higher in poor urban
settlements and states compared to developed states. In many areas of the
country, the highest number of crimes are committed against women and
children.
Crime By State
In India, crime and location are directly related. According to the National
Crime Records Bureau, Uttar Pradesh is the most dangerous state in India. The
state reported the highest number of violent crimes in 2012, accounting for
about 12% of the country's total crime cases. Of the violent crimes committed in
Uttar Pradesh, about 5,450 cases led to a loss of life besides property. The
murder cases reported in UP accounted for 10% of the country's total murder
cases. In 2012, Uttar Pradesh recorded a crime rate per capita of 7.4. Arunachal
Pradesh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and Delhi complete the list of top five
dangerous states in India.
With a crime rate per capita of 5.8, Arunachal Pradesh recorded over 245,000
complaints despite being a small state. Human and drug trafficking are very
high in Arunachal Pradesh. Assam is a beautiful state with a major potential for
tourism. However, it has a high crime rate. Assam has reported the highest
sexual offense cases at 21 for every 100,000.
On the other hand, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and
Gujarat are relatively safe states to live in compared to the top five dangerous
states as these states recorded a crime rate per capita of below 2 in 2012.
Although Kerala has a lower crime rate per capita, it reported the highest
cognizable crime rate among the states of India in 2012. However, its high
population keeps the crime rate per capita lower than other states with much
lower crime cases reported.
Safety In India
The Indian police force, intelligence agencies, and the government are working
hard to curb the high rates of crime in some of the states in India. Unfortunately,
corruption does exist in the country, which often allows criminals with great
amounts of wealth to easily escape prosecution.
