The effects of project-based learning in High School Geometry

Abstract:
Project-based learning is a teaching method that supports students’ concrete understanding of
abstract mathematical concepts. The method engages students’ interest and curiosity by allowing
them to complete projects that relates to real-world situations. This method of learning requires
teacher to plan and develop projects that encourage students to work individually and in groups
to solve problems, plan, collaborate, make decisions, develop technology skills and present
projects to their peers. Project-based learning was implemented in a high school classroom. The
effectiveness of Project-based learning implementation in the high school geometry classroom
was assessed and analyzed to see if technology use and hands-on experiences improved the level
of students’ mathematical comprehension. Students expressed a sense of satisfaction in learning
mathematical concepts through the use of technology and hands on experiences. Mathematical
concepts became clearer with the use of tangible objects and technological devices.

The role of "personal knowledge" in solid geometry among primary school


mathematics teachers

Abstract:
Teachers' personal knowledge (PK) is an element in their pedagogic-practical knowledge. This
study exposes the PK of primary school mathematics teachers regarding solid geometry through
reflection. Students are exposed to solid geometry on various levels, from kindergarten age and
above. Previous studies attested to the fact that students encounter difficulties-strong dislike and
fear engendered by geometry. A good number of teachers have strong dislike to solid geometry,
as well. Therefore, those engaged in teaching the subject must address the problem and try to
overcome these difficulties. In this paper we have introduced the reflective process among
teachers in primary school, including application of Van-Hiele's theory to solid geometry.

An Architecture for High-Throughput and Improved-Ouality Stereo Vision

Abstract:
This paper presents the VLSI architecture to achieve high-throughput and improved-quality
stereo vision for real applications. The stereo vision processor generates gray-scale output
images with depth information from input images taken by two CMOS Image Sensors (CIS).
The depth estimator using the sum of absolute differences (SAD) algorithm as stereo matching
technique is implemented on hardware by exploiting pipelining and parallelism. To produce
depth maps with improved-quality at real-time, pre- and post-processing units are adopted, and
to enhance the adaptability of the system to real environments, special function registers (SFRs)
are assigned to vision parameters. The design using 0.18um standard CMOS technology can
operate at 120MHz clock, achieving over 140 frames/sec depth maps with 320 by 240 image size
and 64 disparity levels. Experimental results based on images taken in real world and the
Middlebury data set will be presented. Comparison data with existing hardware systems and
hardware specifications of the proposed processor will be given.

Construction of Regular Heptagon by Rhombic Bicompasses and Ruler

Abstract:
We discuss a new possible construction of the regular heptagon by rhombic bicompasses
explained in the text as a new geometric mean of constructions in the spirit of classical
constructions in connection with an unmarked ruler (straightedge). It avoids the disadvantages of
the neusis construction which requires the trisection of an angle and which is not possible in
classical way by compasses and ruler. The rhombic bicompasses allow to draw at once two
circles around two fixed points in such correlated way that the position of one of the rotating
points (arms) on one circle determines the position of the points on the other circle. This means
that the positions of all points (arms) on both circles are determined in unique way.

Predicting the Geometry Knowledge of Pre-Service Elementary Teachers

Abstract:
In this study, the aim was to examine the factors that predict the geometry knowledge of pre-
service elementary teachers. Data was collected on 387 pre-service elementary teachers from
four universities by using a geometry knowledge test, the van Hiele geometric thinking level test,
a geometry self-efficacy scale and a geometry attitude scale. Correlation analyses which were
carried out between the geometry knowledge score and all predictor variables revealed that the
relationships between all predictors and geometry knowledge were statistically significant.
Furthermore, the findings from the regression analyses showed that a combination of the
variables of van Hiele geometric thinking level, geometry self-efficacy and attitude towards
geometry was able to predicts geometry knowledge significantly.

Remedial Teaching in Mathematics through Multisensory Strategies

Abstract:
In the present 21st century the explosion of technologies uplift the world into the sky. It leads to
globalization. We require powerful brainy citizens for this competitive world. Education can give
tremendous boost to these citizens in the global society. Education should not only reflect the
needs of the society but also excellence. Every effort should make to adopt our educational
system today’s changing economic and social realities of the scientific world. No branch of
science is complete without mathematics. Mathematical understanding and reasoning are
essential components of success in all walks of life. How did this precious mathematics subject
teach or learn? Being abstract nature of mathematics most of the student find difficult to perceive
it. Teachers are constantly looking for ways or tools to help their pupils understand the
underlying concepts of the lessons. Attention is too paid on the integrative efforts of Information
Processing Approach, Transformation between Short Term Memory and Long Term Memory and
accelerating cognitive strategies. In this situation the investigators adopt some remedial measures
through Multisensory strategies to overcome from these difficulties and enhance the
understanding of the learners. This paper focuses about it.
