Touch Screen Touch-sensitive screens allow you to make selections by pushing on-screen buttons
Guidelines and fields. These controls start once you remove your fingertip from the surface. It is
important that you take your finger directly off of the screen, without dragging it. When
pushing an on-screen button, push gently with the soft tip of your finger. Nails, pens,
and other objects are less effective and may damage the touch-screen. You must give
the system a chance to react. Do not repeatedly push the same selection.

Panasonic Avionics Corporation In-Flight Entertainment Systems bring you state of the
art audio, video, interactive, and telecommunications services.
Cabin Control, Overhead Video, and Passenger Control features provide cabin crew
and passengers access to all IFE services.
1925 – The black and white silent movie The Lost World was shown on a 12-
passenger Handley Page aircraft (a converted WWI fabric–covered, triple engine
bomber).
This “picture theater” represents the earliest validated showing of an in-flight movie,
the beginning of in-flight entertainment

The Panasonic Avionics Corporation System eFX, IFE system consists of four major
segments:
• Cabin Control –System eFX core component:: Control Panel (CP).
• Overhead Video – Overhead video distribution components and display
devices: Tapping Unit (TU), monitors and projectors.
• Passenger Control – Passenger IFE distribution components, Digital
Passenger Control Units (DPCUs) and screens: Enhanced Area Distribution
Box (EADB), Digital Seat Electronics Box (DSEB), handsets, LCD screens.
• Software – Control Panel (CP) touch screens and system software.
This System eFX Operations Manual provides the cabin crew with information for
operating the Control Panel (CP) and its custom Panasonic Avionics Corporation
System eFX In–Flight Entertainment System (IFE).
Description The VCC is located in the stow box on the aft face of lavatory A. The power buttons
that control IFE system power are installed on the forward attendant panel. The
Seat/Passenger switch in the flight deck has priority over the IFE switch. There is also
a data port located in the stow box.
Procedure 1 1. Touch the Control Panel (CP), if the system is on, the Welcome logo screen will

System 2. If the system is off, turn on the IFE button at the forward attendant panel. The
panel is next to the CP.
3. If the Welcome logo screen does not appear, verify that the IFE button on the
forward attendant panel and the Seat/Passenger switch in the flight deck are in
the on position.
This process currently takes approximately 3 minutes and 30 seconds. The entire
process takes 5 minutes.
Once you apply power to the system, the Crew Panel (CP) begins loading. The screen
will display the software loading version and a curser will blink.
Description The Control Panel (CP) provides the operator and maintenance interface for System
eFX. The CP is a computer that displays airline–specific software driven screens. The
CP controls the IFE using touch-sensitive on screen buttons and fields.
Use these controls to communicate with the system, update it, and monitor its
operation before, during, and after flight.
Attendant
Call/Cancel
Description The Business Class Passenger Handset is loaded with features. The front side pictured
above and below, controls passenger screen navigation, mode selection, channel and
volume control, attendant call/cancel and AVOD video controls.
Description Pictured above is the back of the Business Class Passenger Handset. It has a keyboard
and controls for interactive features like games.
Description The Digital Passenger Control Unit (DPCU) controls entertainment functions at the
passenger’s seat.
The LED readout displays the channel selection. Features include channel selection
and volume adjustment.
Description The Smart Display Unit (SDU) provides controls for adjusting brightness, power, and a
credit card reader.
The screen provides touch control to select IFE options. Screens are located in the
seatback in front of the seat it services, mounted on a bulkhead, or on a fold out arm in
the armrest.
IFE/Aircraft Interfaces The IFE System integrates with key Aircraft and Cabin systems including:
• A/C Power
• Satellite communications
• Flight Management Computer (FMC)
• PA
• Discrete data for landing gear – weight on wheels and decompression
Wiring and cables physically connect IFE sub–systems. Various forms of software,
network protocols, data, and media signals manage the logic and data routing.
NOTE: During an audio PA override, the VCPs pause for the announcement. If the
pause exceeds 5 minutes, the video programs stop, rewind, and will need
restarting.
Passenger Interface
Description The passenger Main Menu or Home Page displays a list of available entertainment
options. Selecting the entertainment category displays a list of sub-categories. As an
example, look at the screen progression above. The first screen lists all available
options. Selecting Video on Demand displays a list of movie categories such as
Hollywood, Bollywood, Regional Movies, Jet Kids, and Others. After selecting the
desired category of movies, a list of movie types shows. After selecting the type of
movie, a list of movies shows with information about the movies. From here the
passenger can select and play the movie or go back to select a different movie.
Procedure 4 1. From the Main Menu, use the Smart Display Unit (SDU) to select the desired

Description The Welcome screen appears when the CP finishes initializing. The Welcome screen
also displays after the automatic screen saver activates.
Procedure 5 1. Touch the Welcome screen to display the Main Menu screen.

screen NOTE: The screen backlight turns off after a period of inactivity. Access the Welcome
screen again by touching the screen.
NOTE: The touch-screen works best with the soft tip of the finger pushing the on-
screen buttons. Finger nails, pens etc. damage the screen. Push gently,
straight on the center of the button then lift straight off. Do not drag your finger
on the screen.
Description Use the Main Menu to start/stop in-seat Entertainment, Boarding Music or Arrival
Music. The Main Menu also provides access to all other IFE screens.
NOTE: Current IFE status displays in the information area at the bottom of the screen.
Procedure 6 1. To make a selection from the Main Menu screen, select the desired touch screen

Description Use the Start Boarding/Stop Boarding button to start/stop the boarding music and
adjust volume level as needed. This button is on the Main Menu. When activated, the
message “Boarding Music Playing” shows in the information area in the lower part of the
screen.
Description Use the Start Arrival /Stop Arrival button to start/stop the arrival music and adjust
volume level as needed. This button is on the Main Menu. When activated, the message
“Arrival Music Playing” shows in the information area in the lower part of the screen.
Description Use the Audio PA screen to select, start and stop audio announcements. Select
announcements from the on screen list and play them through the aircraft PA system.
Audio announcements override any other video and audio sources playing. When
activated, a message displays in the information area in the lower part of the screen.
Procedure 9 1. Push [Announcements] from the Main Menu or push [AUDIO PA] from the
Play Audio (PA) column of buttons on the right side of the screen.
Announcement 2. Scroll [▲] or [▼] to view all available Titles when the list is longer than the viewing
area.
3. Touch the desired Title in the list to add highlight and select the title.
4. Push [►] to play the selected audio announcement to both overhead speakers
and headsets.
5. Use Volume [▲] or [▼] to adjust PA volume level.
6. Push [■] to stop the audio announcement.
Description Use the Video PA screen to select, start and stop video announcements. Select
announcements from the on screen list and play them through the aircraft PA and
passenger in-seat systems. Video PA announcements override any other video and
audio sources playing, except for audio PA announcements. When activated, the
message “Playing Message No. ” displays in the information area in the lower part of
the screen.
Procedure 11 1. Push [VIDEO PA] from the column of buttons on the right side of the screen.
Play Video (PA) 2. Scroll [▲] or [▼] to show the desired # Title.
Announcement 3. Touch the desired Title line to highlight and select.
4. Push [Play PA] to play the video announcement to overhead speakers,
passenger screens and headsets.
NOTE: After pushing [Play PA], the button changes to [Stop PA].
Description Use the Video screen to start the broadcast video programming to the seats. Each of
the broadcast videos automatically repeats when it reaches the end.
Procedure 12 1. Push [VIDEO] from the column of buttons on the right side of the screen.
Start Broadcast Video 2. Push [START MOVIE] to start the broadcast video programming to the seats.
Button changes to [STOP MOVIE].
3. Push [STOP MOVIE] to stop the broadcast video. At the confirmation pop-up box,
push [Yes] to stop the video or [No] to cancel the command.
Description Use the Seat Reset screen to reset a seat’s interactive seat functions when necessary
for troubleshooting. Use [Reset All] for large system failures. After selecting Reset Seat
or Reset All, the message “Are you sure you want to reset?” shows in a confirmation
pop-up box as shown below.
NOTE: All seat functions are affect in the selected seat or if all was selected, the entire
aircraft while the seat processors reset. The larger the area being reset, the
longer the interruption is IFE service. A full reset takes approximately 5 minutes.
Procedure 13 1. Push [SEAT RESET] from the column of buttons on the right side of the screen to
Reset a Seat or All go to the Seat Reset screen.
Seats 2. Use SELECT ROW [▲] or [▼] to select a row for seat control actions.
3. Use SELECT SEAT [▲] or [▼] to select the desired seat.
4. Push [Reset Seat] to reset the selected seat. This reboots the interactive
application processor in the seat box.
5. Or push [Reset All] which applies to all seat rows defined in the customer
configuration database.
6. At the confirmation pop-up box, push [Yes] to complete the reset or [No] to cancel.
Description Use the Help screens to provide instructions and information about the current screen.
Procedure 14 1. To get help, push [HELP] from top section of any System eFX screen. You will
Access Help Screens receive information related to the current screen.
2. Use [▲] or [▼] to move through previous or following pages of help text.
3. Push [OK] to return to the previous screen.

NOTE: Resetting a seat takes less than 2 minutes, resetting ALL takes less then 5
minutes.
Fault Analyzing To keep the system operating at peak performance, analyzing and reporting faults to
and Reporting maintenance personal is an important role for cabin crew. Certain information is
extremely helpful in speeding up the time it takes to find and repair a problem.
Please take note of this information and report it to maintenance personnel every time
there is an IFE problem.
