Im A u g u s t 1 9 9 6 landetet W o n g Kar-Wai in A r g e n t i n i e n , 'auf der
a n d e r e n Seite der W e l t ' , u n d b e g a n n mit der S u c h e n a c h g e e i g n e -
ten D r e h o r t e n . N o c h b e v o r d i e D r e h a r b e i t e n b e g a n n e n , fühlte
W o n g s i c h in der W e l t v o l l e r f r e m d e r S p r a c h e n u n d i h m u n b e -
kannter T a n g o - M u s i k v e r l o r e n .
Im Frühjahr 1 9 9 8 flogen d i e D o k u m e n t a r f i l m e m a c h e r K w a n Pun-
l e u n g u n d A r n o s Lee n a c h A r g e n t i n i e n , u m erneut d i e O r t e a u f z u -
s u c h e n , an d e n e n gedreht w o r d e n war. D e r sechzigminütige F i l m
fängt triviale u n d w e n i g e r triviale M o m e n t e der P r o d u k t i o n e i n :
S c h a u s p i e l e r Tony L e u n g u n d Leslie C h e u n g b e i m Tango-Unter-
richt o d e r in einer Bar b e i m Kaffeetrinken, e i n e U n t e r h a l t u n g z w i -
s c h e n W o n g Kar-Wai u n d K a m e r a m a n n C h r i s D o y l e . Zusätzlich
sieht m a n A u s s c h n i t t e aus Happy Together, d i e nicht in d e n F i l m
aufgenommen wurden.
D i e F i l m e m a c h e r K w a n P u n - L e u n g u n d A r n o s Lee s c h n e i d e n d o -
kumentarisches Material und Spielfilmszenen ineinander, spielen
mit d e r C h r o n o l o g i e u n d e r z e u g e n so ungewöhnlich i n t i m e M o -
m e n t e , d i e während der D r e h a r b e i t e n z u Happy Together nicht
hätten entstehen können.

Kar-Wai a n d his c r e w spent in A r g e n t i n a .
In A u g u s t 1 9 9 6 , H o n g K o n g d i r e c t o r W o n g Kar Wai
l a n d e d in A r g e n t i n a , o n 'the other side of the w o r l d ' a n d
b e g a n s c o u t i n g for l o c a t i o n s . Before s h o o t i n g started,
W o n g w a s lost in a w o r l d of foreign languages, w i t h o n l y
tango m u s i c in the air he barely r e c o g n i z e d .
In early 1 9 9 8 , d o c u m e n t a r y f i l m m a k e r s K w a n Pun-leung
a n d A m o s Lee f l e w to A r g e n t i n a , to revisit the l o c a t i o n s
w h e r e the f i l m w a s shot. T h e sixty-minute p r o d u c t i o n
captures trivial a n d s o m e not-so-trivial m o m e n t s f r o m
the p r o d u c t i o n , f r o m a c t o r s T o n y L e u n g a n d Leslie
C h e u n g t a k i n g tango lessons a n d s i p p i n g coffee in a bar,
to behind-the-scenes chats b e t w e e n W o n g Kar-Wai a n d
c inematographer Chris D o y l e , along with some unseen
footage. T h e f i l m m a k e r s crosscut reality w i t h f i c t i o n , play
w i t h c h r o n o l o g y , a n d m a n a g e to create u n u s u a l l y i n t i -
mate m o m e n t s that w o u l d h a v e b e e n d i f f i c u l t to c a p t u r e
d u r i n g the actual s h o o t i n g of Happy Together.
About the title
In m y early clays in B u e n o s A i r e s , I c o u l d often be seen
strolling a r o u n d the city. T h e s h o o t i n g of Happy Together
w a s about to c o m m e n c e a n d there I w a s : a d i r e c t o r w i t h
t w o characters in m i n d for w h o m I h a d m a n a g e d to f i n d
a p l a c e to live but n o t h i n g else. I w a s h u n g r y for details of
these t w o m e n ' s lives.
W h e r e d o they g o for cigarettes? W h a t d o they d r i n k at
h o m e ? D o they d r i n k water? O r A r g e n t i n i a n w i n e ? W h a t
kind? D o they w a s h their c l o t h e s themselves? Is there a
groc er\ store nearby? Is it c h e a p ? D o the\ like p i z z a ?
W h a t d o they d o o n nights w h e n they get bored? W h e r e
d o they g o o n S u n d a y afternoon? D o they e n j o y s e e i n g a
s o c c e r m a t c h ? D o they h a v e e n o u g h c l o t h e s to w e a r ?
D i d they k n o w it w a s g o i n g to be c o l d in the s u m m e r , as
I m y s e l f d i d not k n o w ? D o they get l o n e l y ?
T h r o u g h m y stay in A r g e n t i n a , I g r a d u a l l y lost a sense of
t i m e . A s I d o n ' t speak a w o r d of S p a n i s h , I c o u l d neither
read newspapers, listen to the r a d i o , n o r w a t c h t e l e v i -
s i o n . C o m m u n i c a t i o n w i t h the o u t s i d e w o r l d h a d b e e n
terminated a n d t i m e c e a s e d to m a k e any difference. D a y s
s e e m e d to repeat t h e m s e l v e s . I c a m e to u n d e r s t a n d the
feeling of e x i l e .
gen L e b e n s m i t t e l l a d e n in der Nähe? M ö g e n sie P i z z a ? W a s m a -
c h e n sie a b e n d s , w e n n d i e L a n g w e i l e einsetzt? W a s m a c h e n sie
s o n n t a g n a c h m i t t a g s ? S e h e n sie gern Fußball? H a b e n sie g e n u g
a n z u z i e h e n ? W i s s e n sie - i m G e g e n s a t z z u m i r - , daß es in A r g e n -
tinien i m S o m m e r kalt ist? Fühlen sie s i c h m a n c h m a l e i n s a m ?
W ä h r e n d m e i n e s A u t e n t h a l t s in A r g e n t i n i e n v e r l o r i c h allmählich
jedes Zeitgefühl. Ich s p r e c h e k e i n S p a n i s c h , k o n n t e d i e Z e i t u n g
nie ht lesen, kein R a d i o hören, nicht f e r n s e h e n . D i e K o m m u n i k a -
tion mit der Außenwelt w a r unmöglich g e w o r d e n ; d i e Zeit spielte
k e i n e R o l l e mehr. D i e Tage s c h i e n e n s i c h z u w i e d e r h o l e n . Plötz-
l i c h verstand i c h das Gefühl des Exils.
A l s o stellte ich m i r vor, w a s i c h tun würde, w e n n i c h e i n Reisender
i m Exil wäre. Ich g l a u b e , i c h würde so etwas w i e e i n T a g e b u c h
führen, nur u m mic h bei L a u n e z u halten u n d u m m i c h später
e i n m a l an m e i n L e b e n in B u e n o s A i r e s z u e r i n n e r n . U m m i r z u
b e w e i s e n , daß ic h völlig klar war, stellte ic h nur vor, daß dieses
T a g e b u c h m e i n e i n z i g e r Begleiter wäre. M e i n Begleiter. M e i n Be-
gleiter in e i n e m L a n d des N u l l p u n k t s , o h n e O s t e n n o c h W e s t e n ,
o h n e Tag n o c h N a c h t , w e d e r kalt n o c h w a r m .
In gewisser W e i s e könnte dieser F i l m m e i n imaginäres T a g e b u c h
sein.

D e r M u l t i m e d i a v e t e r a n K w a n Pun-Ieung hat an der H o n g k o n g
A c a d e m y for P e r f o r m i n g Arts u n d S o z i o l o g i e a m L i n g n a n C o l l e g e
in H o n g k o n g studiert. Er ist e i n v i e l v e r s p r e c h e n d e r S t a n d p h o t o -
graph u n d hat für v e r s c h i e d e n e H o n g k o n g - F i l m e , K u l t u r z e i t s c h r i f -
ten, T h e a t e r p r o d u k t i o n e n u n d M i x e d - M e c l i a P r o d u k t i o n e n P h o t o -
g r a p h i e n . 1 9 9 7 arbeitete er z u m ersten M a l als K a m e r a m a n n bei
Stanley K w a n s Hold You Tight. K w a n Pun-Ieung w a r a u c h bei
Stanley K w a n n e u e s t e m F i l m The Island Tales als K a m e r a m a n n
tätig. B U E N O S A I R E S Z E R O D E G R E E ist K w a n Pun-Ieungs erste
Regiearbeit.
A r n o s Lee Y i p - w a h w u r d e 1 9 7 0 g e b o r e n u n d gehört der n e u e n
G e n e r a t i o n unabhängiger f i l m - u n d V i d e o m a c h e r H o n g k o n g s
a n . Er arbeitet außerdem als G r a p h i k d e s i g n e r . 1 9 9 4 führte er sein
erstes s e l b s t g e s c h r i e b e n e s Theaterstück auf. Z w e i Jahre später
b e g a n n er mit bewegten Bildern z u e x p e r i m e n t i e r e n . Seitdem dreht
er M u s i k v i d e o s für t a i w a n e s i s c h e u n d H o n g k o n g e r Sänger, d i e
auf M T V ausgestrahlt w e r d e n . Außerdem gestaltet er F i l m e für
Videoleinwände bei P o p k o n z e r t e n u n d Filmtrailer.
Bei v i e l e n G e l e g e n h e i t e n hat A r n o s Lee nicht nur als Ausstatter,
s o n d e r n a u c h als Regisseur u n d Cutter gearbeitet. Im s e l b e n Z e i t -
r a u m w i e B U E N O S AIRES Z E R O D E G R E E drehte er A Tender War,
eine V i d e o - A d a p t a t i o n einer preisgekrönten Theateraufführung des
Theatre d u Pif.
So I i m a g i n e d w h a t I w o u l d h a v e d o n e if I w e r e a traveller
in e x i l e . I i m a g i n e d I w o u l d h a v e kept s o m e t h i n g of a
r e c o r d , if just to k e e p myself a m u s e d , to r e m i n d myself of
m y life in B u e n o s A i r e s . To p r o v e m y sanity, I i m a g i n e d
this r e c o r d w o u l d be m y sole c o m p a n i o n . M y c o m p a n -
i o n . M y c o m p a n i o n in a l a n d of z e r o degrees, w i t h n e i -
ther east nor west, d a y nor night, neither c o l d nor w a r m .

A m o s Lee Y i p - w a h w a s b o r n in 1 9 7 0 . H e is a m e m b e r of
H o n g K o n g ' s n e w g e n e r a t i o n of i n d e p e n d e n t film-and
v i d e o m a k e r s a n d a g r a p h i c designer. In 1 9 9 4 , A m o s wrote
a n d d i r e c t e d his first theatre p r o d u c t i o n . T w o years later
he started e x p e r i m e n t i n g w i t h m o v i n g images a n d started
a career as an i n d e p e n d e n t v i d e o artist. A m o s ' w o r k has
b e e n e x t e n s i v e l y seen in m a n y H o n g K o n g a n d T a i w a n -
ese singers' M T V p r o d u c t i o n s , p o p c o n c e r t v i d e o w a l l
d i s p l a y s a n d m o v i e trailers. O n m a n y o c c a s i o n s , A m o s
not o n l y served as the art d i r e c t o r but also as the d i r e c t o r
a n d e d i t o r of the p i e c e s . H e recently c o - d i r e c t e d A Ten-
