BIOGRAPHY HATTA RAJASA

Muhammad Hatta Rajasa aka Hatta was born in Palembang, South Sumatra, December 18, 1953
from the couple H. Muhammad Tohir and Hj. Aisyah. He is the second of 12 children. His father
was a soldier who then stopped and chose to become a civil servant while his mother was a
housewife.

Since childhood Hatta has been taught to live disciplined and independent. When in middle
school and high school he had separated from his parents. He lives and studies in Palembang
while his parents are in Ogan Komering Ilir. The distance is quite far around 100 km between
Ogan Komering Ilir and Palembang.

Graduating from high school, Hatta returned to live far from his parents. He attended the
Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
During college, Hatta was considered active in the organization and he was the deputy chairman
of the ITB Petroleum Engineering Student Association (HMTP) and ITB Student Senator.

In addition, he was also an activist at the Salman Mosque in Bandung, even long before he was
active in Indonesian Islamic Students (PII). Graduating from college, Hatta actually wanted to
become a lecturer, but failed because he preferred to help his parents and siblings, he chose to
become an entrepreneur.

Hatta then began his career at the age of 24 as a field technician at PT Bina Patra Jaya in 1977-
1978. In 1980, he was entrusted to be a deputy technical manager at an oil drilling company, PT
Meta Epsi.

His career continued to accelerate at the age of 29, he had become president director of PT
Arthindo. He held this position from 1982 to 2000.

Success in the oil world, he began to be attracted to politics. His activist instincts when students
pushed him into the world of party.

Along with the birth of the Reformation Era, and the establishment of the National Mandate
Party (PAN), Hatta joined PAN by becoming Chairman of the Department of Natural Resources
and Energy. He then ran as a legislative member in the 1999 Election from the electoral district
(Dapil) Bandung, West Java.

His political career began to skyrocket, in the legislature, he was elected chairman of the DPR RI
Reformation Faction. At the first PAN congress in 2000, Hatta was then appointed as Secretary
General to accompany General Chairperson Soetrisno Bachir from 2000-2005.

From the legislative world, he turned to the executive by becoming a number of ministers at
different kebinet. Minister of State for Research and Technology, Minister of Transportation,
Minister of State Secretary, and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs.
