1.1 SCOPE
This report presents the check of the adequacy of the structural members, i.e. Beams,
Columns, Foundations and Masonry Walls for the Existing Laboratory for Qatar Gas II
Development Project against potential blast pressures, and proposes an enhancement
scheme for the Masonry Infill Walls, shown to have severe damage or fail under the
applied blast pressure.
As per the BakerRisk report (See Attachment-1), the blast loads from an explosion caused
by an accidental release of flammable material are sufficient to cause major damage levels,
mainly to the infill masonry walls (Verification of the damage anticipated in the infill
walls is also proven in this report). The report will summarize checks for the adequacy of
all reinforced concrete structural members, i.e. beams, columns and foundation to resist
the blast input of the BakerRisk scenarios. The proposed strengthening scheme of the
exterior masonry walls will also be designed.

The following Guide Drawings were used in the analysis of the existing Laboratory:
1.3 MATERIALS
• As per the general notes of dwg-171 (Attachment-2), Concrete shall be grade 40.
However, design-check calculations of the Concrete shall be based on a Compressive
Strength (f’c) at 28 days of 35 N/mm2.
Deformed Bars Yield Strength shall be assumed 420 N/mm2 for the design check.
Only the worst case scenario is checked. This corresponds to the following blast loading
parameters:
The soil bearing capacity is to be 300 kN/m2 for non-transient loads (Ref.
010/00/00/CI/TS/00/100). For Blast Loads, the soil will be checked for a maximum soil
stress of 3 * 300 * 0.8 = 720 kN/m2.
As per the BakerRisk scenarios, the reinforced concrete structural elements are expected to
have a LOW response. The Infill walls response exceeds the HIGH response criteria, and
the strengthening scheme will be designed against HIGH response criteria. As a rule, the
HIGH response criteria will be respected for both the strengthened infill walls and the
reinforced concrete members.

Dynamic analysis of the structural elements will be performed for blast loads as per the
ASCE-BLAST reference. The blast parameters used and the loads calculation are shown
in the attached Appendix-A.
Date : NOV. 24 ‘07 BLAST CHECK REPORT FOR THE QGX/20/41/AR/CN/NA/501
A blast force is assumed to be applied normal to the long side of the building, hereafter
referred to as the Front Wall (wall along axes 1 or 5).
The Roof Slab is checked against InPlane loads for a tributary area of the full exposed
length of the slab (20 m) and half its height (5.2 / 2 = 2.6m). As per the BakerRisk report,
the worst case scenario pressure corresponds to 3.6 psi and duration of 656 msec. These
loads are transferred from the front wall to the edge walls through in-plane roof slab
behavior. For out-of-plane forces, the roof panels will be checked against the calculated
overpressure and duration. Two cases will be considered in the analysis of the roof slab for
out-of-plane loads. Load Case A is the case where the blast loads are normal to long side
of the buildings, while Load Case B is for the loads normal to the short side of the
building. Roof slab is checked for three panels. Panel A (3 m span One-way slab), Panel B
(5x3 m Two-way slab) and Panel C (4x3 m Two-way Slab).
The Side Walls are checked as cantilevers loaded on top by the Roof InPlane reactions.
Only the edge columns are used as tension/Compression Chords, while the shear friction
resistance between the wall and the bottom slab is calculated based on the Infill
reinforcement and the existing columns reinforcement.
Roof Beams are checked to resist blast loads for both Load Case A and Load Case B. to
account for the dead load of the slab in the equivalent SDOF calculation, the system
resistance is adjusted by the magnitude of the members own weight and the super-imposed
dead and live loads (pre-loading effect). Four beam types will be checked.
The same concept of beam check is applied to Column checks under blast load. The
columns will be analyzed for both load cases A and B, and the dead and live loads of
beams and slabs on top are accounted for in the equivalent SDOF system. One internal
column and one external column are checked.
For foundation checks, an analysis using a static approach is used. The loads applied on
the foundation are determined from the highest Peak Dynamic Reactions from the dynamic
analysis. The peak dynamic reactions from column analysis for both positive and negative
blast phases are added to the assumed maximum and minimum static reactions
respectively.
For Infill Masonry Walls, dynamic checks will be performed for the reinforced masonry
wall for the full vertical span. Only the outer part of the wall will be considered in the
analysis.

As per Figure-7 of Attachment-1, the following properties of the reinforced infill masonry
wall will be used in the design:
For this configuration, the wall clear span checked is 4.4 m (See Attachment-3). The wall
is assumed to be Simply Supported, and the following was obtained:
N.B.: The maximum support rotation obtained is unrealistic (Peak occurring after 1 second
of analysis and still increasing as it is shown in the Figure of Appendix A, page 93). It just
indicates that the wall will fail under the loading conditions imposed.

3. ENHANCEMENT SCHEMES
As per the BakerRisk report, and as shown in Section 2, the only structural component
needing strengthening is the Exterior Masonry Infill Walls. Checking of all other
reinforced concrete members proved the reports finding that the response is satisfactory
and within allowable constraints.
The strengthening scheme proposed for the exterior masonry infill walls consists of
introducing Horizontal Steel Stiffeners mainly at 3.315 m above the Floor Concrete
Level, and these stiffeners will be moved down to ensure that there is no interference with
existence features (such as fluorescent lamps, sensors, speakers, etc.). The horizontal steel
stiffeners sections will be chosen to span the whole distance between adjacent concrete
columns with deflections under blast loads within the allowable taking into consideration
the deformation compatibility with the masonry wall for a span of 4.4 m. The sections will
be chosen for two clear spans of 5.4 m and 4.4 m. For the 8 m span along axes 1 & 5,
Vertical Steel Member will be introduced to shorten the span. The horizontal stiffeners
will be anchored to the block walls at various locations, 0.3 or 0.4 m maximum spacing,
and bolted at the edges to the concrete columns or to the vertical stiffeners. Vertical
Date : NOV. 24 ‘07 BLAST CHECK REPORT FOR THE QGX/20/41/AR/CN/NA/501
stiffeners will be supported at the roof and floor slabs. Existing concrete columns will be
checked for the reactions from the horizontal stiffeners as point loads at mid span of the
column.
Horizontal Steel Stiffener HS: 5.4 m Clear Span along Axis A (East wall)
2 C380x100 Channels will be used as horizontal stiffeners. Adequacy of the section for the
5.4 m clear span will be verified using dynamic analysis. HS will be designed as simply
supported, i.e. bolted connection at both edges. Loads on HS will consist of a 5.4 m (beam
span) * 2.2 m (half the wall span) tributary area exposed to dynamic blast loading.
For the above configuration and for a span of 5.4 m, the following is obtained:
Horizontal Steel Stiffener HS: 5.4 m Clear Span along Axis D (West wall)
2 C300x90 Channels will be used as horizontal stiffeners.
For the above configuration and for a span of 4.4 m, the following is obtained:

Results:
VERTICAL STIFFENERS 2 x C300x90: ARE OK TO RESIST BLAST LOAD
For the above assumptions and for a span of 4.4 m, the following is obtained:
The number of bolts required for the strengthening scheme will be calculated for the
connection of the horizontal stiffener to the existing masonry wall (Connection-1) and for
the connection of the steel stiffener to the existing concrete columns (Connection-2).
3.2.1 CONNECTION-1:
As per Appendix-C, the double channels will be welded to two bent plates which are
bolted to the existing masonry walls at either 300 mm (East wall) or 400 mm (All other
Walls) intervals, to ensure that each block unit is attached. To ensure that the wall will be
connected to the wall at all stages, the bolts will be designed to take the full blast load for a
tributary area of:
Date : NOV. 24 ‘07 BLAST CHECK REPORT FOR THE QGX/20/41/AR/CN/NA/501
2- On all other Walls, i.e. Walls along Axes D, 1 & 5: 400 mm Spacing
Applied Force = 0.4 x 2.2 m (i.e. half the height of the wall) x 13.67 = 12.01 kN.
Reference the attached extracts in Appendix-C from the “HILTI Fastening Technology
Manual”, the M12 bolts chosen, HIT-HY 50 with HIT-IG, have the following features:
Therefore, use 2 M12 HIT-HY 50 with HIT-IG (Maximum Tensile Force = 7.7 x 2 =
15.4 kN) for the Horizontal Stiffener to Existing-Wall Connection.
3.3.2 CONNECTION-2:
The connection between the horizontal stiffeners and the existing column will be designed
for the bolts to take the maximum rebound load as obtained from the dynamic analysis of
the horizontal stiffener. This corresponds to a maximum tensile force of 92 kN. Reference
the attached extracts in Appendix-C from the “HILTI Fastening Technology Manual”, the
M16 bolts chosen, HIS-N with HVU Capsule, have the following features:
Therefore, use 4 M16 bolts HIS-N with HVU Capsule (Maximum Tensile Force = 0.68
x 0.79 x 52.3 x 4 = 113 kN) for the Horizontal Stiffener to Existing-Column
Connection.

APPENDIX-C
DESIGN OF SINGLE ANCHOR: CAST-IN ANCHORS IN CRACKED CONCRETE SECTIONS WITH BUILT-UP GROUT
1- BOLT PROPERTIES/EDGE DISTANCES
Properties
Type of Bolts (D for Ductile or B for Brittle): D Ductile Bolts
Anchor Bolt Diameter d0: 12 mm
Anchor Bolt Effective Cross-Sectional Area Ase: 100 mm2
Bolt Embedment Depth hef: 100 mm
Minimum Allowable Embedment Length is the 100 mm
SMALLER of: 100 mm
ACI318-05-APP-D-CL-D.5.1.2
Edge Distances
These values will be checked for edge distances constraints and for the calculation of ANc as per ACI. When the concrete is continuous from a side, values
corresponding to 1.5 x the Bolt Embedment Length shall be used in Calc. In this case, this value corresponds to 1.5 * 100 = 150 mm ACI318-05-APP-D-FIG.RD.5.2.1(b)
L1 L2
i) Actual Edge Distances Input:
The Following shoulld be used for the input below:
1- If Concrete is Continuous from a Side, Please Input the Letter C W1 .
SIDE B
L1 = C mm
L2 = C mm
W1 = C mm W2 .
W2 = C mm
SIDE A
PLAN VIEW-0
ii) Edge Distances Used for Calculation
For the Bolt used, the following Constraints apply: a1 a2
Minimum Distance = 100 mm
Maximum Distance = 1.5 * hef = 150 mm ACI318-05-APP-D-FIG.RD.5.2.1(b)
Therefore, the Following Values will be used for calculation: b1 .
a1 = 100 mm Anchor Bolt
SIDE B
a2 = 100 mm
b1 = 100 mm
b2 = 100 mm b2 .
SIDE A
PLAN VIEW-1
ANco = Projected Concrete Failure Area for an Edge Distance Equal to 1.5 hef = 9 * h'
2
ef = 900 cm2 ACI318-05-APP-D-CL-D.5.2.1
ed,N = Modification Factor for Edge Effects = 1 if ca,min >= 1.5 h'ef ACI318-05-APP-D-CL-D.5.2.5
0.7 + 0.3 (ca,min / 1.5 h'ef) = if ca,min < 1.5 h'ef
Where ca,min is the smallest side cover distance = 100 mm < 1.5 h'ef 150 mm
Therefore, ed,N = 0.90
c,N = Modification Factor for Cracked Section = 1 for Cast-In Anchors, assuming cracked concrete sections ACI318-05-APP-D-CL-D.5.2.6
The Basic Concrete Breakout Strength in Tension Nb = kc * SQRT(f'c) * h'ef where kc = 10 for Cast-In Anchor ACI318-05-APP-D-CL-D.5.2.2
Therefore, Nb = 32 kN
Strength Reduction Factor - Tension Loads = 0.85 for Cond-A of Cast-In Anchors <-- Applies
0.75 for Cond-B of Cast-In Anchors <-- Applies
The Conc. Design Strength of Anchor in Tension is given by: * Ncb = 0.75 * 13 = 10 kN
