MCL702: ADVANCED FLUID MECHANICS

ASSIGNMENT 3
Due on September 19, 2019 (9:30 AM)

y x
1. Consider the velocity field u  , v   2 2 . Calculate the circulation
x y
2 2
x y

around a circular path of radius 5m, centered at the origin. Assume u and v
have the units of m/s. Hint: Convert into cylindrical coordinates to simplify
your calculations.

2. Prove using index notation that for incompressible fluids

1
 
   u   u    2  u  u   u   2u    

3. In cylindrical coordinates, the velocity components for a uniform flow

around a circular cylinder are
𝑎2
𝑢𝑅 = 𝑈 (1 − 2 ) 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃
𝑅
𝑎2
𝑢𝜃 = −𝑈 (1 + 2 ) 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃
𝑅
Here ‘U’ is the constant magnitude of the velocity approaching the cylinder
and ‘a’ is the radius of the cylinder. For an incompressible and inviscid flow,
determine the pressure p  R,  at any point in the fluid in the absence of
any body forces. Take the pressure far from the cylinder to be constant &
equal to p0 . Also obtain an expression for the pressure distribution p(a,𝜃) on
the surface of the cylinder.
4. Calculate the vorticity at any point (R,𝜃) for each of the following 2D flow
fields:
a) 𝑈𝑅 = 0; 𝑈𝜃 = 𝜔𝑅
Γ
b) 𝑈𝑅 = 0; 𝑈𝜃 =
2𝜋𝑅

Consider 𝜔 & Γ to be constants while (R, 𝜃) are cylindrical coordinates.

5. A free liquid jet, as shown in figure below, has constant ambient pressure.
For the nozzle in the figure, what are the minimum and maximum values of
𝜃 for which the water jet will clear the corner of the building? For which
case will the jet velocity be higher when it strikes the roof of the building?

6. Water at 20°C, in the pressurized tank of figure given below, flows out and
creates a jet as shown. Assume steady frictionless flow, determines the
heights H to which the jet rises.
7. The cylindrical water tank in the figure below is being filled at a volume
flow rate of Q1 = 3.785 L/min, while the water also drains from a bottom
hole of diameter d = 6 mm. At time t=0, h=0. Find & plot the variation h(t)
and the eventual maximum height hmax.
