Release Top Drive Drilling Systems
Date: April 30, 2004
Product: All TDS-9SA, -10SA, -11SA and -11HP Top Drive Drilling Systems
Affected
Assemblies: Hydraulic Oil Reservoir Assembly
Problem: Several reports have been received that the reservoir bladders, used on the
TDS-9SA, -10SA, -11SA and -11HP Top Drive Drilling Systems, are failing
resulting in hydraulic oil leaks.
All Varco portable Top Drives utilize a self-contained on board hydraulic control
system which provides hydraulic power to the AC drilling motor brakes, powered
rotating head, counterbalance system and various pipehandler functions.
The system uses a sealed stainless steel reservoir located between the two
drilling motors on the TDS-9SA, -11SA and -11HP Top Drives and adjacent to
the single drilling motor on the TDS-10SA Top Drive.
This reservoir stores the hydraulic oil, eliminating the need for draining and
refilling during rig moves. Located at the top of the reservoir and mounted
externally is a breather, which connects to the reservoir bladder and allows
containment of the hydraulic oil.
Inspection of several of the failed reservoir bladders have shown tears, which
are consistent with the bladders being filled with hydraulic oil through the
breather.
Note: The breather is not a fill cap and should never be removed to add oil to
the reservoir. Add oil at the hydraulic oil fill only. (Refer to Figure 2)
Maintenance Schedule
• Replace hydraulic filter every 3 months
• Perform hydraulic system oil analysis every 6 months
• Replace hydraulic fluid every 1 year (or earlier based on oil analysis)
• Inspect hydraulic reservoir bladder every 1 year
• Replace hydraulic reservoir bladder ever 2 years
