The University will appoint ONLY the current graduate level students as teaching assistants and

undergraduate level students as Undergraduate TAs. LUMS will also facilitate the appointment of
external TAs who can either be LUMS graduates or graduates from other universities eligible as per
defined criteria.
TAs/Undergraduate TAs at LUMS can benefit from the financial compensation and also gain a valuable
experience by providing assistance in teaching. They, in turn, will make a valuable contribution to the
academic activities of the University within the scope of their appointment.
The TAship/Undergraduate TAship will be a fixed term contractual position compensated on hourly
rate basis.
The responsibilities of TAs entail several aspects, described in the TA guidelines summarized below:

Teaching Assistant
Teaching Assistant is a person who is an active student of graduate level at the University or an
externally hired alumnus/graduate who provides teaching support such as grading, monitoring,
leading lab and/or discussion sessions, recitations, tutorials. A Teaching Assistant will be required to
work during office hours in order to provide assistance to the students. His/her work assignment will
be carried out under the close supervision of course instructors.

Undergraduate TA
Undergraduate TA is an active undergraduate student. An Undergraduate TA’s responsibility is to
provide assistance and mark minor course instruments (e.g. quizzes, MCQs, Lab reports etc.) as
assigned by the course instructor and TA. However, An Undergraduate TA is not eligible to upload
marks in Zambeel and invigilate examinations. S/he can sit through the class upon the discretion of
course instructor and nature of the course. An Undergraduate TA can take a maximum workload of
20 hours per week.

Workload for Part Time TAs/Undergraduate TA(s)


A current student is allowed to take a total TA workload of no more than 20 hours per week. S/he can
take either a single 20 hours’ assignment or split the workload in two 10 hours’ assignments. The TA
assignments can be taken in the same department or across departments. In case of workload
exceeding 20 hours per week, the TA will be required to take this matter up with the respective
school/department TA coordinator as the Accounts Department will NOT pay him/her for more than
20 hours per week.

Responsibilities of TAs
TAs are responsible for assisting instructors in conducting class sessions, handling/invigilation of
exams, quizzes, handling of grading assignments, lab sessions and others.

TA Responsibility in Class
 Maintain class attendance/class participation record
 Administration of Quizzes
 Assistance to maintain discipline in the class

TA Responsibility outside Class


 Hold tutorials/help sessions (TA office hours)
 Prepare and grade quizzes
 Administer Missed quizzes/exams
 Maintain student contact hours
 Prepare, collect and grade assignments
 Help in discovering unfair means by students and initiate Disciplinary procedures
 Examinations (refer: exam policy and procedures)
 Prepare seating plans for examinations
 Handle question papers before, during and after Exams
 Arrive at least 15 minutes before exam
 Diligently perform invigilation duties as assigned by the Instructor
 Report any irregularities to the Instructor/Department
 Handle answer books
 Administer make-up exams as finalized according to the University process
 Additional Responsibilities
 Booking auditoriums/computer labs
 Arranging for equipment (multimedia etc.) in class.
 Efficient communication with course Instructor/Students.
 Any other task assigned by the respective instructor.

Responsibilities of Undergrad TAs


 Provide assistance and mark minor course instruments (e.g. quizzes, MCQs, Lab reports etc.)
as assigned by the course instructor
 Undergraduate TAs can only mark the MCQ portion of a final examination, they are not eligible
to invigilate examinations.
 Undergraduate TAs would not be assigned responsibility of invigilation.
