Kinematika Vector
Definition
3

A vector is a quantity that has both magnitude and direction. It is

represented by an arrow. The length of the vector represents the
magnitude and the arrow indicates the direction of the vector.

Blue and orange Blue and purple vectors Blue and green vectors
vectors have same have same magnitude have same direction but
magnitude but different and direction so they different magnitude.
direction. are equal.

Characteristics of Vectors
4

• A Vector is something that has two and only two defining

characteristics:

• Magnitude: the 'size' or 'quantity'

• Direction: the vector is directed from one place to another.

Direction
5
• Speed vs. Velocity
• Speed is a scalar, (magnitude no direction) - such as 5 feet
per second.
• Speed does not tell the direction the object is moving. All
that we know from the speed is the magnitude of the
movement.
• Velocity, is a vector (both magnitude and direction) – such
as 5 ft/s Eastward. It tells you the magnitude of the
movement, 5 ft/s, as well as the direction which is Eastward.

Example
6

•The direction of the vector is

55° North of East

•The magnitude of the vector

is 2.3.

Vector Basics
8

 We will be using vectors a lot in this course.

 Remember that vectors have both
magnitude and direction e.g.
 You should know how to find the a, 
components of a vector from its magnitude
and direction a x  a cos 
a y  a sin  y

Unit Vectors and Components
10

The idea of
multiplication by real
numbers allows us to
define a set of unit
vectors at each point in
space (ˆi, ˆj, k̂)
with | î | 1,| ˆj| 1, | k̂ | 1

Determinants
11

• Determinants are useful in eigenvalue problems and

differential equations.
• Can be found only for square matrices.
• Simple example: 2nd order determinant
1 3
det A   1* 7  3 * 4  5
4 7

Kinematika Vector
3rd order determinant
12

• The determinant of a 3X3 matrix is found as follows:

a11 a12 a13
a22 a23 a21 a23 a21 a22
det A  a21 a22 a23  a11  a12  a13
a32 a33 a31 a33 a31 a32
a31 a32 a33

• The terms on the RHS can be evaluated as shown for a 2nd order
determinant.
