Open Module H, Unit 4-Lesson 2: ORGANIC MOLECULES-DIGITAL LESSON

Go over the information in the digital lesson. Then, answer the questions below:

LESSON 2

1. Write the seven characteristics Carbon has.

1 The melting point of graphite is 3500ºC
2 Carbon has several allotropes
3 About 20% of the weight of living organisms is carbon.
4 Each carbon atom can form four chemical bonds to other atoms
5 Carbon has 6 electrons
6 Other atoms share electrons with carbon to form covalent bonds
7 Carbon can form rings or straight or branched chains
2. What is an organic compound?
Is when one or more atoms of carbon are covalently linked to atoms of other elements, most
commonly hydrogen, oxygen, or nitrogen. The few carbon-containing compounds not classified as organic
include carbides, carbonates, and cyanides.
3. How are organic compounds represented? Write one example of each
The organic compounds are represented by formulas like
Ethanol: CH3CH2
Acetic acid: C2H402
4. Describe the three possible combinations of bonds that a carbon atom form.
One triple bond and one single bond
Four single bonds
Two double bonds
5. What is the relation between (H) hydrogen, (O) oxygen, (N) nitrogen, (P) phosphorus, S (Sulfur) and (C) Carbon?
They all bond perfectly with carbon
6. How are organic molecules classified? Use a graphic organizer.

A compound that
Are only composed of A compound with contains oxygen,
oxygen and carbon acidic properties carbon and
hydrogen

hydrocarbons organic acid carbohydrate

A large molecule
that is made up of
monomers

polymer
7. Into what categories can organic compounds be grouped? Use a graphic organizer to explain.

malic acid, apples contains it

acetic acid, vinegar contains it

amino acids, made up of some proteins

formic acid, ants acid contains it

carbohydrates, sucrose contains it

glucose, corns contains it

8. Explain using your own words how organic compounds are necessary for life on Earth?
Organic compounds are essential for our life because they give us some proteins, carbohydrates, some
acids that our body need to function very well, without that little things we can almost get dead
After complying with these activities, open Lesson 1: CHEMICAL REACTIONS-DIGITAL LESSON

Go over the information in the digital lesson. Then, answer the questions below:

1. What is a chemical reaction?

It is a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance
2. What are the four changes that show a chemical reaction is taking place? Use a graphic organizer.

when 2 liquids
reactions that make
combine and form a
strong odors
solid

change in the color of when energy is

something released or absorbed
3. What is a reactant? What is a product? Explain by using an example.
Hydrogen and chlorine are reactants, chemicals that bond.
A substance formed of a chemical reaction is called the product
4. What does the Law of Conservation of Mass state? What does the law of Conservation of Energy state?
Matter cannot be created or destroyed, it can change forms but is conserved
5. How can you tell if a chemical reaction might have taken place? Explain using your own words.
A chemical reaction I can say that is when something liquid cause some smoke by mixing with something
solid or something solid and gaseous can make an explosion
6. What’s the classification of chemical reactions?
In exothermic and endothermic
7. What is the difference between endothermic and exothermic reactions? Explain with an example.
Exothermic is a reaction that release heat and some light like a burning
Endothermic is a reaction that absorbs energy like the photosynthesis
8. What factors affect the rate of a reaction?
Higher temperatures
Increase the surface area of solid reactants
Increasing the concentration of reactants
A catalytic converter (for slow reactions)
9. What is a chemical equation and how is it used?
Numbers and symbols that can represent some chemicals and chemical reactions, it is used with symbols
and numbers that can represent the type of chemical and the number of atoms that it had
10. How do you have to balance a chemical equation?
First you´ll count the number of atoms in each element, reactant and product. If there is 2 atoms in the
reactants we´ll place the coefficient 2 in the product
11. What is a catalyst? What does it do?
A catalyst increase the rate of a chemical reaction without being used up in the process
Finally, use a word document to comply with the activities that you could not finish. Print them out and paste them on
your notebook. The teachers must see at least 70% of your work in class.
