Synthesis: Learners Under Frustration Level
Reading is a vital element in a child’s education. This is a very crucial part in the first five
years of a child. If a child manifests difficulties in reading at this period, it might pose a
very huge dilemma in the consequent stages.
During the conduct of the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI), approximately
40 of the students in the elementary were identified as Frustration readers. This means that
20% of students from grades 3 to 6 have difficulty in reading per se and in reading
comprehension.
To address this matter, the reading teachers of the school formed a plan on how to help
these struggling readers. After a series of considerations, a program named “Synergy”
was born. Synergy somehow functions like Differentiated Instruction, where students are
given tasks according to their interests. In this reading program, the students were divided
into three categories: (1) Students who need to go back to Phonics, (2) Students who
could not recognize the basic sight words, and (3) Students who have difficulties in
reading words with more than one syllable. These students were separately taught by
reading teachers who specialize in those categories.
