World Heritage Convict Sites:

New South Wales


Old Government House and Domain
- Oldest intact former vice-regal residence
- Was the residence and offices of prominent governors of New South Wales
- Here, decisions were made about the control and administration of the colony and
management of convicts

Hyde Park Barracks


- First government-built convict barracks
- Only remaining barracks building and complex from the Macquarie era of convict
administration
- It marked a turning point in Australia’s management of transported convicts from
Britain
- It was designed by Australia’s first architect Francis Greenway and is regarded as
one of his best works

Cockatoo Island Convict Site


- Contains the last remaining dry dock in Australia built using convict labour
- Convicts also built buildings and fabrics related to the administration, incarceration
(imprisonment) and the working conditions of convicts

Old Great North Road


- Significant example of major public infrastructure developed using convict labour
- Located in the unaltered natural bushland setting
- Best surviving example of an intact convict-built road with massive structural works,
which remains undisturbed by later development

Tasmania
Brickendon and Woolmers Estates
- Located in Northern Tasmania
- A remarkable example of a farming property dating from the 1820s
- The property has been continuously farmed by the descendents of the Archer family
for six generations, who have ensured that the convict built farm complex
- The Georgian country house and formal gardens remain largely intact
Darlington Probation Station
- Located on Maria Island (off the east coast of Tasmania)
- Offers a glimpse into our convict past and the probation system that was unique in
Tasmania
- The 13 structures that remain are set amongst a relatively unchanged landscape,
uniquely demonstrating the philosophy behind the probation system

Port Arthur
- Established in the 1830s
- Was originally a timber station.
- Site of the worst mass murder in post-colonial history in 1988.
- Unique in that it used psychological punishment on convicts held there.
- Rumoured that the waters around the location are shark infested.

Coal Mines Historic Site


- This convict site is an outstanding example of the economic value of convict labour.
- Before the discovery of coal at Plunkett Point in 1833, the coal found at this convict
site had to be imported to NSW
- Located in the northern tasmania
- The coal was used a way to pay for itself from a penal colony to a free colony

Cascades Females Factory


- Located in tasmania
- Primary site of incarceration of women convicts
- Became known for overcrowding, disease, lack of industry and high birth and death
rate

Western Australia
Fremantle Prison
- Several hangings were conducted at the prison.
- Closed 1991. It was also known as the Fremantle Gaol.
- Replaced by Casuarina Prison.
- Large riot during 1988 which caused almost $2 million worth of fire damage.

Norfolk Island
Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area
- Located on Norfolk Island
- Also known as KAVHA
- The area was abandoned by the government twice
