Reflection
(Minimum of 3-4 sentences per question)
1. Briefly describe the field experience. What did you learn about technology coaching and technology leadership from
completing this field experience?
For this particular experience, I created a Quizlet study deck to help students review the skills, terms, ideas, and facts that they
would be expected to demonstrate mastery of via their multiple-choice assessment at the end of our unit on epic poetry. I created
the study deck to help all students, however, in creating this deck I knew that ELL students could benefit significantly from using
this resource. This was especially helpful for my ELL students because it offered a condensed review of the material that they
were expected to know. However, the real helpful part of this lesson were the tools used to adapt it for ELL success. Quizlet has a
great feature that will read the text aloud for each question and answer. Additionally, through using a Google Chrome extension
called SpeakIt, created by an organization called iSpeech, students are able to have the computer translate the words into their
native language if they do not understand the question, answer, or particular word within the review. As with most translation
technology, the translation is not always perfect. However, after personally working with my ELL students using Quizlet and
SpeakIt, one of my ELL students demonstrated 81% proficiency on their assessment and the other demonstrated 94% proficiency.
I met with each of my ELL students individually. Since there are only two of them this was the most productive setting. When I
met with each student during Bear Time (which is basically my school’s solution for a study hall), the first day I showed them
how to use Quizlet—especially the read aloud feature. The next day, I met with those students to review what they learned by
using Quizlet. They were a little frustrated because there were still some things that they were unable to understand. So the second
day, I showed them the SpeakIt extension.
2. How did this learning relate to the knowledge (what must you know), skills (what must you be able to do) and
dispositions (attitudes, beliefs, enthusiasm) required of a technology facilitator or technology leader? (Refer to the
standards you selected above. Use the language of the PSC standards in your answer and reflect on all 3—knowledge,
skills, and dispositions.)
Knowledge –
In order to adequately utilize Quizlet for this review, I had to know how to use the Web 2.0 tool on a basic level. I also had to have
the content knowledge to build the study deck. Since I did not want to simply give students the questions and answers to the test, I
had to creatively structure the questions and answers so that they could practice the material without simply regurgitating the
material for the test. Additionally, with my ELL students in mind, I had to know that Quizlet had the read aloud feature and I had
to know that the SpeakIt extension would offer an added level of accommodation for those students.
Skills –
For this experience and review to be successful, I had to know how to properly utilize Web 2.0 tools and provide supportive
accommodations for ELL students. I wanted to make sure that I was not stifling their language acquisition progress by giving
them the answers in a way that would allow them to subvert the language barrier by visually recognizing the answers--but rather
provide them with the tools to aid their learning despite the language barrier . My ELL students still had to read the text using
Actively Learn and they were still expected to master the same skills as all of my other students. Through the additional support of
the tools used during this experience, my knowledge and skills of proper implementation of ELL accommodations allowed my
ELL students to achieve just as much (and even more than some) success as native English speakers on the same assessment.
Dispositions -
Within this context, my enthusiasm, for Quizlet and SpeakIt also sparked an enthusiasm with my students. When I showed them
the SpeakIt feature, they were both excited to use it and stated that they wish they had known about this tool sooner. Because of
their response, I shared this tool with our ESOL department in hopes that they would be able to offer this tool to more students. I
firmly believe that knowledge of innovation must be shared to be impactful.
3. Describe how this field experience impacted school improvement, faculty development or student learning at your
school. How can the impact be assessed?
This experience really addressed faculty development and student learning. It impacted faculty development because after sharing
this tool with my students, I shared it with my colleagues because of my student’s feedback about the tool. When I shared this tool
with our ESOL department, they were all grateful as they are always looking for additional tools that offer support for our ELL
students. Students were impacted by this experience because they were able to learn about a tool that helped them to achieve
success on a summative assessment. This success was vital to help them maintain the momentum and enthusiasm in achieve
success in their classes.
