CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Sexuality education embrace learning about physical development, including sexual and
reproductive knowledge, gender identity, sexual orientation, skills and values to make individuals
be responsible enough in terms of making decisions about their sexual and social relationships.
Learning in this area also gain to educational success and positive mental, emotional, physical and
spiritual health. Through these it can minimize the impact of unwanted pregnancy and abortion. It
may also gather information to deepen the understanding of individual. Education on sexuality
come from a wide sort of sources involves home, peers, media and religious institutions.

It has been established that sex education can be defined as an “education which increases
the knowledge of the functional, structural and behavioural aspects of human reproduction” (Chan
and Jaafar ,2009). However, with the arising number of causes related to social problems, the
Ministry of Education had decided to implement sex education in schools in hoping to reduce
social problems such as baby dumping or abortion, teenage pregnancy and run away cases
(Minderject, 2010). On the other hand, some people believed that sex have its positive effects on
initiation of sex, frequency of sex, number of sexual partner, condom use and other sexual
behaviour that can prevent negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes (Kamaruzaman,
2012). Adolescence is a period of which ushers male and female into a world of pleasurable
experiences. It is a period filled with excitement and desire for sexual release. It is also a period
where adolescents are filled with curiosity and exploration about the world as well as their body
(UNICEF, 2011).

Sexuality is practiced and expressed in thoughts, desires, beliefs, values and behaviour.
Sexuality is influenced by the interaction of psychological, social, ethical, historical and religious.
Collins 2008, argued that sexuality education encompasses about information about family
planning, reproduction, body image and decision making. In the result of adolescents
permissiveness towards sex are enormous. The result may defined as contact sexually transmitted
disease like Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and STD’s.
In this study it will make every individuals understand the impact of sex in their lives. It
can also answer the questions that they have regarding their curiosity about sexual content. It may
also help them understand the differences and keep the desire to explore things for themselves for
their safety. Sex education promote healthy awareness in each individuals of his or her sexual
development, functioning, behaviour and attitudes.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the Sex Education and Perception towards Sexual Content in
Senior High School Students around Sogod National High School.

Specifically, it answers the following questions:

1. Perception towards sex education

2. Level of exposure to print and media sexual content and;

3. Is there significant relationships between number 1 and number 2.

Scope and Delimitation

The objective of this study is to identify the perception of the students towards sex
education and sexual content around Sogod National High School from Senior High School
Department Grade 11 and 12 in the school year 2019-2020.

Significance of the Study

The results would benefits the following:

Teenager- The result of the study would benefit the teenager because it can deepen their
understanding towards sexual orientation, physical development, sexual and reproductive
knowledge. Also it can give them healthy awareness.
LGBT Community- The result of the study would benefit the LGBT community because they
will be able to understand and lessen the cause of STD’s and HIV and they will know the ways of
controlling their sexual emotions.

Parents- The result of the study would benefit the parents for their child will gain knowledge
about sex education and will be aware of the outcomes when they enter sexual activities at the
early age.

School- A School plays an important role in implementing effective sex education to growing
children. Effective sex education in school prevents adolescents experimenting with sex.

Societies- The result of the study would benefit the society because it is important for the societies
that its individuals are well- informed about sex, sexual practices, child sexual abuse and sexually
transmitted disease.
