2. ACTIVITIES, PROGRESS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

2.1 GEOLOGICAL MAPPING ON 1:50,000 SCALE

Geology of Pakistan is characterized by the interaction of Indian, Arabian and Eurasian
plates in different regions under different tectonic settings. This complex interaction has
not only created sky scraping mountain ranges in the northern areas but concurrently
fabricated significant geological and tectonic features in other regions of Pakistan.
GSP is the premier geoscientific organization of the country and has been implementing
statuary obligation of geological mapping and other geoscientiifc surveys. GSP has
completed the geological mapping of the entire outcrop area of the country on
1:250,000 scale. In 2017-18, the preliminary geological mapping of approximately 7040
sq. km area on 1:50,000 scale has been completed in different parts of the country. The
mapping includes coverage of 1920 sq. km. area in Balochistan; 1280 sq. km. in Punjab,

2.4.3 GROUNDWATER STUDIES FOR HARD ROCK AQUIFERS IN ISLAMABD

GSP has effectively carried out geophysical investigations for exploration of ground
water resources in different regions of Pakistan. In this regard, the most outstanding
achievement is the delineation of hard rock aquifers in early 2000 in Quetta valley. This
discovery has averted the looming calamity that included the possibility of shifting a
major portion of the Quetta population to other parts of the province.
To explore new resources of groundwater in Islamabad, a detailed fieldwork is executed
from January to March, 2018, under the annual field program titled “Groundwater
Resource Estimation of Hard Rock Aquifers in Islamabad, Capital Territory". Initially,
different areas of Islamabad including Barakahu, Quaid-e-Azam University and green
belts of Kashmir highway have been covered. Deep resistivity survey was executed
down to a depth of 500 meters, representing the first ever deep resistivity survey done
in Islamabad. The aim of the survey was to demarcate deep hard rock aquifer to provide
long term, safe and healthy water supply.

2.5 CHEMICAL ANALYSES

Geological Survey of Pakistan has state of the art research facilities for geochemical
analysis. Various methods have been developed for the analysis of different samples,
ranging from solid fuel (coal) to water, ores to minerals and stream sediments.
Analyze 52 samples for 10198 estimations in GSP labs at Quetta, Lahore, Karachi and
Geoscience Lab, Islamabad. Prepared 1049 powdered samples and 750 thin sections and
76 ore blocks. Analyzed 438 samples by XRD/DTA, 157 samples by scanning electronic
microscope (SEM), 616 samples by EDS and petrographic studies of 42 samples
completed at the GSP geoscience advance research Laboratory, Islamabad
