1. An adiabatic compressor operating under steady state conditions receives air (ideal gas) at 0.1
MPa & 300 K and discharges at 1 MPa. If the flow rate of air through the compressor is 58
gram/s, determine the power consumption of the compressor. γ for air is 1.4.

2. 1000 mol of an ideal gas is compressed isothermally at 300 K from 100 kPa to 1000 kPa in a
piston cylinder assembly. Calculate entropy change of system, surroundings and universe if
(i) the process is reversible and surrounding consists of a heat reservoir at 300 K, and (ii) the
process is irreversible, requiring 20% more work than the reversible compression.

3. Air is compressed from 21oC and 200 kPa to 1000 kPa in an adiabatic compressor with an
efficiency of 0.82. Estimate the final temperature, the work required and entropy change of
the air. Take γ for air as 1.4.

4. A small, high-speed turbine operating on compressed air produces a power output of 100W.

The inlet state is 400 kPa, 50 C, and the exit state is 150 kPa, -30 C. Assuming the velocities
to be low and the process to be adiabatic, find the required mass flow rate of air through the
turbine. Take Cp of air as 100 J/kg-K.
5. A car engine burns 5 kg fuel at 1500 K and rejects energy into the radiator and exhaust at an
average temperature of 750 K. If the fuel provides 40000 kJ/kg energy, what is the maximum
amount of work the engine provide?
