Project Summary
AMASE - Joint European Master Programme in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering is a full-time
programme offered since 2005 by: Universität des Saarlandes (Saarbrucken - Germany); Université de Lorraine
(Nancy - France), Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (Barcelona - Spain) and Luleå Tekniska Universitet (Luleå
- Sweden). The consortium has a long experience following 25 years of collaboration within the EEIGM - École
Européenned'Ingénieurs en Génie des Matériaux and several EU-Projects, including the Erasmus Mundus
Doctorate DocMASE. Duration: 2 years, 120 ECTS, including a 6-month Master Thesis (30 ECTS). Objectives: to
provide high-level multinational and research-oriented education in materials science and engineering(MSE), well
integrated language and cultural experience; to prepare students for a PhD and for the industry and thus
contribute to innovation and enhancement of the renown of European universities. At least two languages of
instruction: English (in Sweden), German, French and Spanish (depending on chosen universities). Language
courses integrated in the programme (12 ECTS). Intercultural training module during integration week.
Entrepreneurial training during Professional Summer School. Students attend courses at two universities: 1st and
2nd semesters at entrance university, 3rd semester at second university, fourth semester (Master Thesis) at one
of these two universities. Adaptation phase in 1st semester: Module I – Structure and properties of materials;
Module II - Characterisation andmodelling of materials; Module III - Technologies of materials. Afterwards, five
possible specialization tracks (2nd and3rd semester): Track 1: Advanced metallic materials - Design,
characterization and processing; Track 2: Polymers and composites - Modelling, processing and tailored
properties; Track 3: High performing surfaces - Coating, structuring and functionalization; Track 4: Materials
engineering and manufacturing technologies; Track 5: Bio/Nanomaterials (including special applications). Entry
requirements: BSc or similar degree with training in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and basic knowledgeof
MSE. Sufficient knowledge of the language of the entrance university (B1-B2). Students obtain a Joint Master
Certificate, a Joint Diploma Supplement and a double Master's degree awarded by the two universities they have
attended. Strong network of associated partners involving renowned research centres and industry for doing
common research projects and master thesis. Partners in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, India,
Mexico, Morocco, Russia, Tunissia, South Africa, and USA among others which collaborate in disseminating the
programme, selecting students, and helping students with mobility arrangements. Strong interaction with industry:
common research projects & internships.
