Convective Heat and Mass Transfer

Home Assignment 6
7th February 2019
Marks: 20 Due Date: 11th February 2019

(1) Velocity and temperature profile at a particular x-location for laminar flow in a
parallel plate channel have the form:
u (y) = 0.75 [1-(y/d)2]
T (y) = 5.0 + 95.66 (y/d)2 – 47.83 (y/d)4
with units of m/s and oC respectively. Here, “2d” is the separation distance
between the parallel plate channel. Determine the corresponding values of
bulk mean temperature, Tm. [5]
(2) Water enters a tube at 27oC with a flow rate of 450 kg/h. The heat transfer
from the tube wall to the fluid is given as qs” (w/m) = a x, where the coefficient,
“a” is 20 W/m2 and x (m) is the axial distance from the tube entrance. What is
the outlet bulk mean temperature of water for the 30 m long tube?
[5]
(3) Two plates of 1 m long and 1 m width in a Couette flow configuration are
separated by a distance of 1 cm between them. The top plate is maintained at
20 oC and bottom plate is maintained at 10 oC temperature. The top plate is
dragged at a velocity of 100 m/s and water is filled between the two plates.
(a) Develop the expression for temperature distribution inside the two plates
and plot the temperature profile in the gap region.
(b) Find out the magnitude of heat flux and its direction at the bottom plate.

Note: Take viscous dissipation into consideration
