Descriptive Essay of Comic Strips

As I choose to make comic strips for my childhood memoir, I mean to make it reflective

for the parents. I want to express the difference made by effective and ineffective

communications. Many adults maintain that children won’t remember certain things after they

grow up because they were too little to remember. Many parents tend to not understand what

children actually feel and what ideas they can get from parents’ behavior. However, I want to

argue that children’s feelings matter because they are really sensitive towards parents’ attitudes.

Thus, any events happen during their childhood could cause some damage to the rest of their

lives.

In the comic strips of my childhood memoir, I told a story of my family dinner, which I

was treated unfairly by my mother and my grandmother. In my whole childhood, I was being

compared with my cousin Will who was also my best friend. He was my family’s “favorite”

because when we were younger he is well behaved and talented in many areas. In that family

dinner, my grandmother brought some pretty commemorative coins for us as gifts. My mother

told her that I would lose those eventually. She maintained that Will deserved it because he did

really well in school and he was well behaved as always. She thought it could motivate me to be

more like Will and put the effort into my school work more. However, she didn’t realize that

while she was constantly comparing us, I was hurt inside deeply. This event projected a shadow

of unconfidence in the following years. Even in high school, I was unconfident about many

things. Thus, I created the comic strips to make the parents aware of what effect they are causing

to their children. The difference between a memoir in text and a comic stirps memoir is the

different perspectives. In my essay which wrote about this memoir, I started from my perspective

as an adult, which my audience would feel the same way I feel as an adult. However, in the
comic strips, I utilized the perspective as a kid, in which the audience can more directly

understand how children’s perspectives work and what things are in their eyes.

Comic strips could be intriguing and easy to start reading, which can attract the

audience’s attention and interests really fast. For example, audience can easily see a little girl

crying in the piece and they would want to figure out what happened in this story. Thus, comic

stirps is a straightforward way to attract readers. This form of the medium also vividly conveys

the perspective of a child, which expresses the sense of innocence and purity of children. The

facial expression in my comic strips amplifies the feelings and emotions I want the audience to

feel. For example, I added crying face, nervous face, mad face and disappointed face on my

characters. Thus, choosing comic strips as a way to tell my childhood memoir can evoke stronger

pathos for the readers. Furthermore, I apply the Chinese language in the conversation block of

the comic strips. It adds more culture elements that reflect the authentic family culture in China.

While I was composing this piece of work, I was deciding using different tools. In the

beginning, I was going to hand print my memoir. However, drawing skills and textures of paper

really limited the effect I wanted. I started searching for some online comic strips generators, I

had to try several different ones to decide the style of my work. For example, some generators

generate styles that are too simplified are My piece is more cartoon-like, which not only can

express my perspective better but also intrigue the audience.

These comic strips could be on any handbook for parents. Those handbooks could even

be handed out to parents through orientations at kindergartens or elementary schools. It is a great

tool to make the parents be conscious of the way they are parenting. It could also be posted on

Instagram because it is easy to read and slide. Thus, because of such natures of comic stips, my

work could be on many different social media, which can influence more people. Because social
media is one of the most effective ways to pass the message we want to convey in nowadays.

They could also be printed on magazines for children and parenting related magazines. People

who have access to those magazines do pay attention to the way they educate their children.

Thus, these comic strips could cause the better contribution to their parenting ways.
