WHEN DID INTERPRETING HISTORY STARTED?

Since the destruction


of the Babel Tower,
said John Trevisa, a
popular writer and
translator from
Trevessa, Great
Britain. Others might
say that there is
evidence that it was
actually before that
event.

fuentes existentes al
respecto, se sabe que la
interpretación existe ya
desde la Antigüedad; de
hecho, la primera mención a
esta profesión se remonta al
tercer milenio A.C. y se
encuentra en unas
inscripciones de los
monumentos funerarios de
los príncipes de Elefantina. En Egipto y en el Imperio Persa
existían también los intérpretes,
e incluso un jeroglífico para
designar esta realidad. También
en Grecia y en Roma existía la
actividad de la interpretación.
MIDDLE AGE

The First official translation


school existed in Toledo, Spain
by the 12th century, and the
languages used there were
Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic
and the newcomer Spanish.

Also during the crusades, the


role of the interpreters,
called “Dragoman”, was
crucial. There are some
authors who consider this as
the formal birth of the
modern diplomatic
interpretation.
EDAD MODERNA

• XV y XVI en España los intérpretes desempeñaron un


importante papel en los grandes descubrimientos.

• XVI y XVII se fueron estableciendo normas en lo relativo a


los intérpretes en el continente americano.

• XIX se fueron sucediendo normas que regularían la


actividad de los intérpretes jurados. También en esta
época, comenzó a cobrar importancia la interpretación en
el ámbito diplomático y político.
SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION

 The first patent for simultaneous interpretation


equipment was given in 1926 to Gordon Finley at
IBM

 This system was first used at the International


Labor Conference in 1927; it reportedly saved the
International Labor Office £32,700.
SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION

 Simultaneous interpretation had a tremendous


importance at the postwar Nuremberg Trials in
1945.

The reason is simple, there were four different


languages being used at the same time. For this
the solution was Simultaneous Interpretation

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
INTERPRETATION AND TRANSLATION

Both have the same objective: Transmit a message


(working with messages in different states)

 Interpretation works with spoken words

 Translation works with written words


SKILLS NEEDED FOR INTERPRETATION
AND TRANSLATION

Both Interpreters and Translators:

 Excellent knowledge of both languages


 To be really into reading
 To have wide cultural knowledge and awareness
 To be really creative
 To know how to work under pressure
 To have good research skills
SKILLS NEEDED FOR INTERPRETATION

Interpreters:

 To have excellent oral communication skills


 To be able to do more than one task at the same time
 Able to accurately and idiomatically turn the message
without any additions, omissions or other misleading
factors.
 To show self confidence

Translators:

 Excellent writing, including grammar, spelling, and


semantic
 To be able to work in the same routine every day
 To know how to work under time pressure
DIFFERENT TYPES OF INTERPRETATION

There are two main types of interpretation:

 Simultaneous Interpretation

 Consecutive Interpretation

We differentiate one from the other by the period of time


between the speech and the interpretation.
GROUP WORK

1. Groups of 4: Students will make a time line with the


history of interpretation in Bond Paper for flip chart.

2. Presentation: Students present their time line.


Interpretation types and modes

Defining
Interpreting

Interpreting is regarded here as translational activity, as a


special form of «Translation». Interpreting is an ancient human
practice which clearly predates the invention of writing – and
(written) translation.

Within the conceptual structure of Translation, interpreting


can be distinguished from other types of translational activity
most succinctly by its immediacy; in principle, interpreting is
performed «here and now» for the benefit of people who
want to engage in communication across barriers of language
and culture.
