THE AUTHOR
HER LIFE
Born in the city of Kuala Lumpur in
1969, Dina Zaman is a prolific writer
who made her mark in Malaysian
literature in English. She is among
the local writers who passionately
writes on cultural issues, religion, DINA
gender stereotypes mainly of the
Malays. At times she can be rather
ZAMAN
vocal in exploring modern issues such
as sexuality and identity in her
poems and prose. Thus, she represents
the voice of the modern Malay woman
when writing about taboo and
contemporary subject matter.
ON HER BOOK

King of The Sea (a collection of


short stories) took Dina Zaman
(the author of I Am Muslim) about

KING OF 13 years to complete. The stories


began as part of her project she
THE SEA was a masters student at Lancaster
University in 1993, inspired by
her homesickness, and her longing
for the 'Terengganu air'. She
explores themes of love, grief,
loss and longing, and the magic in
our lives in this book.
Dina Zaman's childhood was spent
in Japan, Russia and other countries. She studied
mass communications and creative
writing at Western Michigan
University and Lancaster University respectively. In
2007, a collection of her columns for the online
newspaper Malaysiakini.com was published in book
form as I am Muslim. She has recently published a
collection of short stories, titled, 'King of The Sea'
(Silverfish Books, 2012).She also has a second non-
fiction book, Holy Men, Holy Women (2017). The book
seeks and showcases people of faiths in Malaysia.

She is also an award-winning writer of
non-fiction, fiction and poetry. She
has had media presence locally and
abroad as a columnist since 1994
namely The Malaysian Insider and The
Star and commentator of current
affairs since 2005. Her latest book,
King of The Sea, is long-listed for the
Frank O’Connor Short Story Award.
