LPU-DVO SAVE Club Gets Disaster Risk Informed in a One-Day Seminar

In response to the call of the National Government and the Department of Education on
shared accountability, a one day seminar on Mainstreaming Climate Change and Disaster
Risk Reduction Management was conducted in Grand Regal Hotel Lanang, Davao City
last August 20, 2015. Fifteen students from Students Against Vandalizing the
Environment (SAVE) Club of Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Davao attended
the said event.

The seminar workshop aims to enhance the participants on the basic knowledge on
disaster preparedness.

The activity is supported by Republic Act No. 10121 of 2010 which provides for legal basis
for policies plans and programs to deal with disasters. The National Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Plan (NDRRMP) covers four thematic areas namely 1)
Disaster prevention 2) Disaster Preparedness 3) Disaster Response and 4) Disaster
Rehabilitation and Recovery.

During the one day seminar, the participants were given an overview of the Philippine
DRRM system, with emphasis on the salient points of RA 10121. They were also
introduced to different hazards surrounding the Philippines, there types, causes, and
effects. Lastly, they were taught with practical steps on implementing DRRM.

The speakers came from different offices of the Philippines concerning disaster risk
reduction management which includes Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Region 11, Mr.
Marvin D. Samson and Mr. Franz Joseph Fontilla, Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR), Ms. Jayvee Jude Agas, Philippine Volcanology and
Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Ms. Svetlana Tequin-Catoera, and Philippine Atmosphere
Geophysical and Astronaut Services Administration (PAGASA), Mr. Jaymar Artigas.

The seminar was concluded by Lenie Duran Alegre, OCD XI regional director, who
expressed gratitude to all participants for their support and interaction.
