‘No homework’ policy is no good

Shekinah Nicole Dy

The "no homework" policy proposed by the Department of Education (DepEd) is

probably cool like most reactive policies in the country. But it should be seriously thought of
because banning teachers from giving take-home tasks to be completed by students outside of
regular school hours is not beneficial to Filipino students as it could create wrong values
among learners – thus, making the country's education system problematic. In the long run, if
students fall short of the access to education, the concern for the welfare of students and their
families will be hurt. As a result of a "no homework" policy, Filipino students will be less
prepared in the future, and the totality of the country will suffer the consequences.

Doing homework teaches a student not only about the subject matter, but also about
good values. Homework should not be seen as a problem as it is not intended to make life
difficult for students, it is all about teaching discipline, responsibility, and continuity of
learning among learners. It is vital in education, giving students the chance to apply
knowledge learned in school. It gives students practice in developing good work habits and
methods. Homework allows "more education". And rather than preventing families from
bonding, doing homework promotes quality time for a family by helping out learners to
complete it. Thus, strengthening family bonding.

Our lawmakers must think about the condition of our nation. Homework aids the
sustainability of the flow of lessons and excluding it for non-academic reasons such as
bonding time with family is a conflict to the vision of education. Given that some students do
not have innate discipline, what hinders students from studying like ‘social media, computer
games, truancy, etc.' should be banned and not homework. Rather than a "no homework"
policy, the DepEd should assess and modify current policies regarding homework to ensure
that they meet productive goals. #
