FIRST SEMESTER MTECH(STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING)

END SEMESTER EXAMINATION-NOV/ DEC 2012
ANALYSIS AND SESIGN OF TALL STRUCTURES (CIE-547)
(Revised Credit System)
-12-2012

TIME: 3 Hours] [Max. Marks: 50

Note: 1. Answer any FIVE FULL questions

2. Any missing data may be suitably assumed
3. Use IS 456-2000 is permitted

Q.1 (A) Discuss briefly regarding design criteria of tall buildings related to (a) Sequential
loading (b) Stiffness and drift limitation (c) Human comfort. (06)
(B) Write briefly with neat sketch the behavior of Wall-frame interaction to lateral
loads. (04)

Q.2 A two bay S story frame has the following particulars; all elements of frame are
250mm x 400mm in size. The height of each storey is 3.2 m and beam spans are
5m. The live load on all beams is 12kN/m and dead load on all beams is 20 kN/m.
The building is to be designed for lateral load due to wind and vertical gravity loads.
The design wind pressure may be assumed = 1.0 kN/m2. Determine the moments in
the beam due to vertical gravity load by substitute frame method and due to
horizontal load by portal frame method. (10)

Q.3 Determine the deflection due to lateral load for a multi-storied building given the
following details; building has 42 storeys, each has 3.2 m height, each frame has 3
bays each of 8 m span. All the beams has size of 300 mm x 800mm and all the
columns have size of 600mm x 1000mm. Wind pressure at the site may be
assumed as 1.5 kN/m2. There are 4 Frames spaced at 8 m c/c, and 2 shear walls
each 300 mm wide and 12000 mm in length. Calculate also the load shared by frame
and shear wall by approximate method without considering the frame shear
wall interaction forces. The materials are M60 grade concrete. (10)

Q.4 A circular chimney is 70 m height, has a constant shell thickness of 220 mm. The
exterior diameter is 6m and is reinforced with 1.3% steel. The wind pressure at site may
be assumed as 1.2 kN/m2, the shape factor for chimney is 0.7 and M30 grade concrete is
used. Determine the section from top where stress distribution is such that wind ward
force stress is zero. Also evaluate max. stress in concrete and steel
at the section and also at base. (10)

Q.5 Calculate the critical buckling load for ground floor columns of a building frame
shown in Fig. Q5. The column and beam are of 230 mm x 300 mm size, each story
height is 4.2m, span L=4.0 m and lateral load/ story is 50 kN. The total live load and
gravity load on the floor beam is 55 kN/m and on the roof beam is 40 kN/m. Also
calculate the P-Delta effect by iterative method upto second iteration. Assume M40
grade concrete. (10)

Q.6 For an outrigger braced structure as shown in the Fig.Q6, determine the moment in
the core and draw BMD. The grade of concrete used is M60 for all elements. The
size of core is 0.3 x 12 m, size of each outrigger is 0.3 x 6m. The lateral wind load is
12 kN/m, H1= 35m x 12 storey, H2=3.5m x 22 storey, H3= 3.0 m x 20 storey and L1
=8 m, all column sizes are 1.2 m x 1.2 m. (10)
