Shared Hosting VS VPS Hosting,

What’s the Difference and What You Need to Know

Hello, there. If you are here, I assume that you are probably planning to get a website,
running a business which requires a website, or even a curious individual who seeks more
understanding about web hosting.
Well, rest assured.
By the end of this article, you will learn about what hosting is, what is the difference
between hosting, & how each kind of hosting gives you an advantage over one another.
What is hosting?
First, hosting or also known as web hosting is a place that allows a website to be
accessible through the internet. It provides a place for the website by rent (usually for one
year) to present its data. In this case, the example of data that you can put there are
script, picture, file, email, etc.
A suitable analogy to this is to take hosting as a department store. Further, websites are
the stores inside the department store building.
For example, if you want to establish a business or a stall inside the department store,
then you will have to rent or pay for the facilities that you will get from the building. Indeed,
there will be limited space that you can get. It depends on how big is the size of the
department store.
As every store has its way to operate their business, it is also similar to the website. The
user of the hosting has its responsibility to manage their website while paying the rent
fee.
Now that you have a general understanding of hosting and website, let's move to the
diversities between Shared hosting and VPS hosting.
Shared hosting and VPS hosting
There are two popular hosting through the internet, which are Shared and VPS. These
two hostings have their advantage and disadvantage when it comes to providing their
services.
 Shared hosting
Shared hosting is a hosting that provides each renter with the same space for their
website data. Thus, the user has to share the server with other clients.
Since the server resources of each client are shared, the use of shared hosting should
be wise in using their resource. In this case, they are not allowed to use resources to
pass the limit.
It is possible to imagine shared hosting as a hostel (or inn) where you can rent a room to
stay in. The hostel will prepare the room with the same size for each.
However, there are several facilities that you need to share with the other customer such
as water, bathroom, electricity, etc. When a customer overused the facilities that are
meant to be shared with others, it will cause trouble for the rest of them.
It is similar to how shared hosting works. When users of a shared hosting overuse their
server resources, it will affect the performance of other website included in the shared
hosting.
While being limited in term of server resources, shared hosting offer cheaper pricing for
their hosting rent. This will allow many individuals to rent hosting without worrying much
about their finance.
 VPS hosting
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting is a hosting that includes each user with their
server resources. Therefore, the website activity of the user is not affected by other users
under the same hosting.
Since VPS provides more resources to its user, the user authority to their website will be
significantly increased and less restricted.
To put it simply, it is like renting a store in a shopping complex. Unlike renting a stall in a
department store, renting a store in a shopping complex means you are renting the whole
building.
Which means you are responsible for operating the building as a whole store.
When you are managing your website in VPS hosting, you should not be worried about
affecting other clients under the same hosting.
According to Leslie (2019), it is also possible to move from shared hosting into VPS
hosting (it is called migration). Nevertheless, such action is known to be complicated and
required some time.
While having much more freedom and authority to organize their website, the fee of VPS
hosting is indeed above the shared hosting. Thus, the clients of VPS are more well-
funded in finance.

Conclusion
Each web hosting has its ups and downs. Nonetheless, it depends on the purpose of the
users that might bring out the hosting best potential.

your website. On the other hand, VPS hosting will give you more privilege to establish
your website while having more demanding rent payment.
