DepEd will review K-to-12 curriculum – Briones

By Syrah Vivien Inocencio / INQUIRER.net intern

Education Secretary Leonor Briones on Wednesday said the Department of Education (DepEd) would
review the K-to-12 curriculum after two years of implementation

“We are going to have a thorough review of the curriculum of the Department of Education (DepEd) after
we have been there for two years already, so we have made enough experience,” Briones said in a Palace
briefing.

“We will review the curriculum from Kindergarten to Grade 12 because we have been getting feedback as
well and we are welcoming feedback from the public about the curriculum content,” she added.

After two years, the curriculum would have to be reviewed, she said.

“Right now, as we are sitting, changes are occurring,” she said. “Many things are happening in this world,
which our children have to catch up well.”

Briones cited how education had focused on the demand for students to be taught good English following
the boom of call centers, which was believed to give employment to many graduates.

But she said call centers agents in other nations had started to be replaced by robots. “Call centers are now
replaced by robots in other countries,” she said. “So, if you are preparing our children to speak beautiful
English for call centers then perhaps we will truly be left behind. We have to teach our children to be the
ones to make the robots and this is why we are teaching robotics in the high schools.”

She said that students now should be taught how to respond and adapt to change, stressing the importance
of learning skills that students could apply after graduation.

“We teach them how to analyze, how to solve problems, how to respond to change and to accept change
because by the time they graduate, whatever we have taught them, not all of them, will be applicable –
because change is happening so fast,” she said.

By Ronda Balita Online News
ng Catacte (As for me, the plan is not bad but it will affect the residents of Catacte) ,” ani Merly Padilla,
Catacte”.
segregation, no collection policy”.
dito araw-araw.
“We are looking for alternative solution kasi alam naman natin (because we know), let’s be real, ano kasi
yung lupa nauubos, yung basura dadagdag at dadagdag yan. Yung scientific logical na pamamaraan
(method) at (and) ecological ay hindi masosolusuyunan ang probelma sa basura ,” ani Secretary to the
Mayor Fernan Tadeo.

Nina Rey Pelayo & Ruth Navales, UNTV News

“Pati pagkain niya hindi nakakain that is very detrimental then halimbawa yung pati pagwiwi niya
games.
“We’ve seen and we’ve heared stories ba dahil nakaaadik ganung types ng games, tapos pag nakakakita
yung tipong namamaril parang feeling nila madaling gawin yun kasi barilan nga yung kanilang
pinaglalaruan.”
paglalaro.
“Yung grades niya pwedeng maapektuhan, pwedeng bumaba or yung school participation niya
maaapektuhan din kasi he’d rather play than interact with other children.”
digital gadget.
“Kailangan lang iregulate ninyo like you allow them to play foe about 30 min then tell them na
maglolowbat kasi anak. There are limitations din sa ginagamit niyang gadgets,” pahayag pa ni Pacao.

25 million students seen helping plant trees

By Philippine Daily Inquirer

In response to the call of President Rodrigo Duterte to protect the environment, the Department of
Education (DepEd) plans to tap 25 million students nationwide for a campaign for every student to plant a
tree every year in schools, communities and other areas like watershed.

In a statement quoting him, Education Undersecretary Alain del Pascua said efforts to plant trees would
not only help repair deforested areas, but were acts that show “we love one another.”
n a speech at the Annual Million Tree Challenge (AMTC) Recognition and Pledging Day held recently,
Del Pascua said planting trees would also be a “manifestation of love of country.”

Del Pascua said “by involving our learners to each plant a tree every year, we will not only further
educate them about reforestation but also bring to their consciousness the importance of preservation and
conservation of one of the most basic resources: water.”

The AMTC, initiated by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), was a call for
focus and priority on the environment.

In 2017, at least 1.2 million trees were planted in six watersheds—Ipo, Angat, Umiray, Marikina, La
Mesa and Laguna lake through the AMTC.

“It is timely in the wake of massive flooding, catastrophic landslides, and devastating loss of livelihood
and lives due to climate change,” del Pascua said.

“We all have to do our part,” he added.
