departure from Egypt and Pentecost
memorializes the culmination of
the harvest season and the coming
of the Holy Spirit. So what does the
Feast of Trumpets memorialize?
“And the LORD spake unto Moses,
saying, Speak unto the children of
Israel, saying, In the seventh month,
in the first day of the month, shall
ye have a sabbath, a memorial
of blowing of trumpets, an holy
convocation. Ye shall do no servile
work therein: but ye shall offer an
offering made by
fire unto the LORD”
(Leviticus 23:23–25). The resurrection

seven appears to usher in the Day
of the Lord’s wrath and the coming
of Christ as King of Kings and Lord
of Lords. But there is something
else that takes place on that day. It
is the day when the saints are raised
from the dead and rise to meet the
returning Lord in the air.
1 Corinthians 15 speaks to this issue.

you the gospel which I preached
to you, which also you received
and in which you stand, by which
also you are saved, if you hold fast
that word which I preached to
you—unless you believed in vain”
(1 Corinthians 15:1–2). This is not
merely a recapitulation of the Gospel
he preached. It is necessary in the
face of heresy to certify what he
had preached. 1 Corinthians 15 is
sometimes called “the resurrection
chapter” and it is that certification. It
is a presentation of the case for the
resurrection in the
face of opposition.
“For I delivered
to you first of all
that which I also
received: that
Christ died for our
sins according to
the Scriptures, and
that He was buried,
and that He rose
again the third day according to the
Scriptures,” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
This is important. For if it is not
attested by scriptural authority, then
it is devoid of meaning. Paul doesn’t
cite a scripture here, presumably
because they should have known
them.
What might he have had in mind?
“Surely He has borne our griefs And
carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed
Him stricken, Smitten by God, and
afflicted. But He was wounded for
our transgressions, He was bruised
for our iniquities; The chastisement
for our peace was upon Him, And
by His stripes we are healed. All we
like sheep have gone astray; We have
turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the
iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:4–6). Or,
“I have set the LORD always before
me; Because He is at my right hand
I shall not be moved. Therefore my
heart is glad, and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will rest in hope. For
You will not leave my soul in Sheol,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One
to see corruption” (Psalms 16:8–10).
There is also Jonah’s three days and
three nights in the great fish. The
three days is important, because it
attests, in the standards of the time,
real death, not a coma.
“…and that He was seen by Cephas,
then by the twelve. After that He was
seen by over five hundred brethren
at once, of whom the greater part
remain to the present, but some have
fallen asleep. After that He was seen
by James, then by all the apostles.
Then last of all He was seen by me
also, as by one born out of due time.
For I am the least of the apostles, who
am not worthy to be called an apostle,
because I persecuted the church of
God. But by the grace of God I am
what I am, and His grace toward me
was not in vain; but I labored more
abundantly than they all, yet not
I, but the grace of God which was
with me. Therefore, whether it was
I or they, so we preach and so you
believed” (1 Corinthians 15:5–11).
Now, having established the
testimony of the scriptures and the
witness, Paul turns to the argument
at hand. “Now if Christ is preached
that He has been raised from the
dead, how do some among you say
that there is no resurrection of the
dead? But if there is no resurrection
of the dead, then Christ is not risen.

And if Christ is not risen, then our
preaching is empty and your faith is
also empty” (1 Corinthians 15:12–14).
Who were these people? Christian
Sadducees? It is inevitable that there
would have been such doubt. Note
well, it is the resurrection that is the
key. The mere death of the Messiah
accomplishes nothing relative to
salvation. The resurrection is the
pivotal event upon which history
turns.
“Yes, and we are found false witnesses
of God, because we have testified of
God that He raised up Christ, whom
He did not raise up; if in fact the
dead do not rise” (1 Corinthians 15:15).
Let’s not equivocate here. If the dead
don’t rise, I am a liar. Matthew is a
liar. Mark is a liar. Luke is a liar. John
is a liar. Paul is a liar. For we have the
written testimony of five witnesses to
the story. If there is not a resurrection
then they are false witnesses.
“For if the dead do not rise, then Christ
is not risen. And if Christ is not risen,
your faith is futile; you are still in your
sins” (1 Corinthians 15:16–17)!

 And I suspect there are those who
believe that it was the cross that
eradicated their sins—no, it also
required also the resurrection—the
whole package had to be complete.
“Then also those who have fallen
asleep in Christ have perished. If in
this life only we have hope in Christ,
we are of all men the most pitiable.
But now Christ is risen from the
dead, and has become the first fruits
of those who have fallen asleep. For
since by man came death, by Man
also came the resurrection of the
dead. For as in Adam all die, even so
in Christ all shall be made alive. But
each one in his own order: Christ
the firstfruits, afterward those
who are Christ’s at His coming”
(1 Corinthians 15:18–23).
“Then comes the end, when He
delivers the kingdom to God the
Father, when He puts an end to all
rule and all authority and power.
For He must reign till He has put
all enemies under His feet. The
last enemy that will be destroyed is
death” (1 Corinthians 15:24–26).
How do you destroy death? By
raising the dead. The power of death

“For ‘He has put all things under His
feet.’ But when He says ‘all things
are put under Him,’ it is evident that
He who put all things under Him is
excepted. Now when all things are
made subject to Him, then the Son
Himself will also be subject to Him
who put all things under Him, that
God may be all in all” (1 Corinthians
15:27–28). This does not suggest
inferiority, but subjection and it
is presented to us in terms of the
relationship between Father and
Son—a family relationship.
“Otherwise, what will they do who
are baptized for the dead, if the dead
do not rise at all? Why then are they
baptized for the dead? And why do
we stand in jeopardy every hour? I
affirm, by the boasting in you which
I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I
die daily. If, in the manner of men,
I have fought with beasts at Ephesus,
what advantage is it to me? If the
dead do not rise, ‘Let us eat and
drink, for tomorrow we die!’ Do not
be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts
good habits.’ Awake to righteousness,
and do not sin; for some do not have
the knowledge of God. I speak
this to your shame. But someone
will say, ‘How are the dead raised
up? And with what body do they
come?’” (1 Corinthians 15:29–35).
It is interesting that this question
about the body is still around. People
commonly ask if we will know one
another in the resurrection. You will
know who you are. And since you
can tell me who you are, then I can
know you.
“Foolish one, what you sow is not
made alive unless it dies. And
what you sow, you do not sow that
body that shall be, but mere grain;
perhaps wheat or some other grain.
But God gives it a body as He
pleases, and to each seed its own
body” (1 Corinthians 15:36–38).
Okay, I sow a grain of wheat, and I
get a plant that grows up from it, I
get wheat not barley.
“All flesh is not the same flesh, but
there is one kind of flesh of men,
another flesh of animals, another of
fish, and another of birds. There are
also celestial bodies and terrestrial
bodies; but the glory of the celestial
is one, and the glory of the terrestrial
is another. There is one glory of the
sun, another glory of the moon, and
another glory of the stars; for one star
differs from another star in glory. So
also is the resurrection of the dead.
The body is sown in corruption, it
is raised in incorruption. It is sown
in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It
is sown in weakness, it is raised in
power. It is sown a natural body, it
is raised a spiritual body. There is a
natural body, and there is a spiritual
body” (1 Corinthians 15:39–44). The
difference, though, is not in kind, it
is in glory.
Continuing in Verse 45: “And so it is
written, ‘The first man Adam became
a living being.’ The last Adam became
a life–giving spirit.” The allusion here
to Jewish belief is interesting. They
believe Adam became a living being
on Rosh Hashanah and there is a
case made that Jesus also was born
on Rosh Hashanah.
“However, the spiritual is not first,
but the natural, and afterward the
spiritual. The first man was of the
earth, made of dust; the second Man
is the Lord from heaven. As was
the man of dust, so also are those
who are made of dust; and as is the
heavenly Man, so also are those who
are heavenly. And as we have borne
the image of the man of dust, we shall
also bear the image of the heavenly
Minnow this I say, brethren, that
flesh and blood cannot inherit
the kingdom of God; nor does
corruption inherit incorruption” (1
Corinthians 15:46–50).
“Behold, I tell you a mystery: We
shall not all sleep, but we shall all
be changed; in a moment, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last
trumpet. For the trumpet will
sound, and the dead will be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be
changed. For this corruptible must
put on incorruption, and this
mortal must put on immortality”
(1 Corinthians 15:51–53). This
strongly suggests that we don’t have
it right now.
“So when this corruptible has put on
incorruption, and this mortal has put
on immortality, then shall be brought
to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death
is swallowed up in victory.’ ‘O Death,
where is your sting? O Hades, where
is your victory?’ The sting of death is
sin, and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the
victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be
steadfast, immovable, always abounding
in the work of the Lord, knowing that
your labor is not in vain in the Lord”
(1 Corinthians 15:54–58). None of
your sacrifice is in vain when you do
it in the Lord.

The Day of Atonement

In the book of Hebrews there is a
commentary about the Tabernacle
ceremony on the Day of Atonement.
The subject throughout the book
is Christ, His divinity, and His
priesthood. Jesus is our high priest
even though in the flesh he comes
from the tribe of Judah, and not Levi
(Hebrews 7:14). In the process of
explaining and developing the idea of
the priesthood of Christ, we are given
a Christian commentary on the Day
of Atonement, which is Yom Kippur,
and tells us what it actually means to
a Christian.
The section that I want to look at in
Hebrews begins in chapter 9. This
is part of a much longer discussion
about the priesthood of Christ, the
service of Christ and all that He
did. The author of Hebrews finds it
necessary to digress a little bit and
explain some things to us about the
ordinances of divine service in the
Tabernacle in ancient times.
He says in Hebrews 9:1 “Verily the
first covenant had also ordinances
of divine service, and a worldly
sanctuary.” In other words, this is
something on earth that we go to and
something we do.
He said “There was a Tabernacle made;
the first, wherein was the candlestick,
and the table, and the showbread;
which is called the sanctuary. And
after the second veil, the Tabernacle
which is called the Holiest of all.”
(Hebrews 9:2-3). The layout of the
Tabernacles was actually pretty
simple. If you have a piece of paper,
you could draw a rectangle with a
ratio of two by one and it is composed
of two squares, each of them the same
size, and one of the squares is a holy
place and the other square is the holy
of holies or the holiest place of all.

showbread, and so forth.
The Holy of Holies “which had the
golden censer, and the ark of the
covenant overlaid round about with
gold, wherein was the golden pot
that had manna, and Aaron’s rod
that budded, and the tables of the
covenant; And over it the cherubim
of glory shadowing the mercyseat;
of which we cannot now speak
particularly. Now when these things
were thus ordained, the priests could
always go into the first Tabernacle,
accomplishing the service of God.
But into the second one, the holy of
holies, the high priest could only go
once every year alone. He did not
go in without blood, because he had
to offer it for himself, and for the
errors of the people: The Holy Spirit
signified by this, that the way into
the holiest of all was not yet made
manifest, while as the first Tabernacle
was yet standing” (Hebrews 9:4-8).
This last verse is really interesting
when he says that the Holy Spirit
signified something in the order of
service of the old Tabernacle—he
is saying that the very layout of the
Tabernacle, the structure of it, and the
service that the priest performed, was
done by the direction of the Holy Spirit
to signify something. Everything had
meaning. In this case man did not
have complete access to God during
the time of the Tabernacle—it was
limited in the old times, but it will
be different. Everything they did had
meaning and you see that by the time
the book of Hebrews was written, the
apostles were beginning to see how
all of the ceremonies were playing
out on the stage of the Tabernacle and
pointed to Jesus Christ.
The writer of Hebrews continues in
chapter 9:9, “Which was a figure for
the time then present, in which were
offered both gifts and sacrifices, that
could not make him that did the
service perfect, as pertaining to the
conscience; The fact of the matter is
these things were not so much for the
heart, they were to teach.”
Verse 10 “They stood only in meats
and drinks, and diverse washings,
and carnal ordinances, imposed on
them until the time of reformation.”
Now here is where it gets connected
to Christianity. “But Christ being
come an high priest of good things to
come, by a greater and more perfect
Tabernacle, not made with hands, that
is to say, not of this building; Neither
by the blood of goats and calves, but by
his own blood he entered in once into
the holy place, having obtained eternal
redemption for us” (Hebrews 9:11-12).
Continue reading about this
ceremony in verse 13 and 14: “For if
the blood of bulls and of goats, and
the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the
unclean, sanctifies to the purifying
of the flesh: How much more shall
the blood of Christ, who through the
eternal Spirit offered himself without
spot to God, purge your conscience
from dead works to serve the living
God?”
It is plain that the writer of Hebrews
sees a strong connection between
this old ceremony on the Day of
Atonement and the blood of the little
goat being taken into the Holy of
Holies and the blood of Jesus Christ
offered one time to God for us.
“Whereupon neither the first
testament was dedicated without
blood. For when Moses had spoken
every precept to all the people
according to the law, he took the blood
of calves and of goats, with water,
and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and
sprinkled both the book, and all the
people, Saying, This is the blood of the
testament which God hath enjoined
unto you. Moreover he sprinkled with
blood both the Tabernacle, and all the
vessels of the ministry. And almost
all things are by the law purged with
blood; and without shedding of blood
is no remission” (Hebrews 9:18-22).
In Hebrews 9:24 he says, “For Christ is
not entered into the holy places made
with hands, which are the figures of
the true; but into heaven itself, now to
appear in the presence of God for us:
Nor yet that he should offer himself
often, as the high priest entered into
the holy place every year with blood
of others; For then must he often
have suffered since the foundation of
the world: but now once in the end
of the world hath he appeared to put
away sin by the sacrifice of himself ”
(Hebrews 9:24-26).
You see it’s just exactly like the high
priest would go once in a year into
the Tabernacle. Jesus appears once in
the world to be a sacrifice for sin, “It is
appointed unto men once to die, but
after this the judgment: So Christ was
once offered to bear the sins of many;
and unto them that look for him shall
he appear the second time without sin
unto salvation” (Hebrews 9:27-28).
“But after this the judgment” in verse
27 gives us food for thought, doesn’t
it? But that will have to wait till some
other time.
