Content: Vertebrate and Invertebrate Animals

Content Standards: The Different characteristics of vertebrate and
invertebrate animals
Performance Standards: Make an inventory of vertebrate and invertebrate
animals that are commonly seen in the community.
Code: S6MT-II-e-f3
I. OBJECTIVE:
Classify vertebrate animals based on their characteristics.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Classifying vertebrate animals based on their characteristics.
Vertebrates are animals with backbones and they are
classified into five smaller groups, fishes, amphibians, reptiles,
birds and mammals. These animals are also called chordates.
They are the most common and familiar animals that can be
seen anywhere.

III. LEARNING TASKS:
A. ENGAGEMENT:
1. Singing a Science Song
2. Review:
3. Motivation:
Do you know the different animals around you? Find out by
answering the riddles
1. I live in water and I have gills for breathing. My
body
is covered with scales and I have fins that
help me move and keep my balance. Who am I?
2. I spend part of my life in water and part of my life
on land. I have gills for breathing and they soon be
replaced by a pair of lungs as I grow older. Who
am I?
3. People are afraid of me. I have lungs as the main
organ of respiration and I have dry scaly skin. Who
am I?

4. I have wings that enable me to fly. My skeleton is

made up of strong but light bones. I have legs for
walking or running. Who am I?
5. I am fond of eating grass. I feed my young with
milk. I have lungs for respiration and four legs for
walking or running. Who am I?

What do you think the five animals have in common?

B. EXPLORATION

1. What to do:
a. Divide the class into 4 groups
b. Distribute the task card
c. Set standards to be followed while performing the
activity
d. Activity proper
The pupils will perform the activity (Activity 1 Classifying
Vertebrate Animals)
e. Teacher’s Supervision

C. EXPLANATION:

1. Discussion and Analysis

a. Reporting the results of the activity by the group
b. Discuss and analyze the result.
2. Finding Out:
1. How did you classify the animals that you
observed?
2. What characteristics did you consider in
classifying and groupings the animals that you
found?
3. What are the five classification of animals?
4. How do vertebrates animals differ?

D. ELLABORATION:
1. For additional information the teacher will let the pupils to
watch the video about the vertebrate’s animals.

2. Generalization:
How are vertebrates classified?

3. Application:
Some of your friends have decided to shoot at birds
nesting near the field of your school. What should you do to
stop them from doing so?

E. EVALUATION:

Classify the following animals. Use the chart below.

Milkfish duck elephant mudfish salmon

Whale hawk kangaroo ostrich frog
Alligator turtle lizard salamander tuna
Deer toad parrot woodpecker snake

Classifying Vertebrate Animals
Vertebrates belong to one of the phyla of the animal kingdom
called phylum chordate. Phylum chordate consists of animals with a
dorsal spinal cord running along the entire length of their body. Cartilage
or bones are the building materials of most vertebrate endoskeletons.
Vertebrates are considered as the highly developed animals in
the animal kingdom. The vertebrates are then subdivided into five
classes according to the animal similarities and differences in
characteristics.

ACTIVITY 1
Problem:
What are the five groups of vertebrates?
Materials:
Pictures of different animals that can be found in the zoo (at least 30)
Manila Paper
Marking Pen
Paste

Procedure:
1. Together in a group, study and analyze the pictures of animals you
and your member brought.
2. Group the animals according to their similarities
3. Paste the pictures of the animals of the same group in Manila paper.
Also write the common features they have using marking pen.

Vertebrates

What have you find out:

1. How many groups of animals your team was able to form?
2. What were your bases in grouping the animals?

3. How did you group the animals?

4. What are the five classification of animals?

5. Describe each group of vertebrates.

ACTIVITY 2
Problem
What are the characteristics of each group of vertebrates?
Materials
Frog puppy
Fishes like bangus chicken
Tilapia or gold fish preserve lizard or snake
Toad bird
kitten

Procedure
1. Group the animals in the following order
A. Tilapia, bangus, goldfish
B. Chicken, bird
C. Kitten, puppy
D. Frog, toad
E. Preserve lizard or snake
2. Examine the body covering of each animal. Observe the
structure and the movements. Feel their skin.
3. Based on their physical appearance, movements and the kind
of skin, describe each of these kind of animals. Fill the table.
Check the body covering of each animal.

Body is covered with

Animals Hair Scales Feathers Slippery Tough
Skin Scales
1.Frog
2.Lizard
3.Snake
4.Kitten
5.Puppy
6.Bangus
7.Chick
8.Tilapia
9.Bird
10. Man
11. Toad
12. Goldfish

What have you found out?

1. What are the different groups of vertebrates?
2. List down the general characteristics of vertebrates
3. Why are human groups with vertebrates?

ACTIVITY 3

Vertebrates have all similarities and differences. This makes the groupings
clearer. Answer the questions and list the animals that belong to each group.
1. What are common about vertebrates?
2. How will you describe vertebrates?

ACTIVITY 4

Classification - The Vertebrates

Cut out the words and match them to the definition and examples
