CNO STANDARDS

Accountability- Each nurse is accountable to the public and responsible for ensuring that her/his

practice and conduct meets legislative requirements and the standards of the profession

I am a male registered practical nurse refresher program student diagnosed of

tuberculosis during my program. I was instructed by the public health nurse that need to be

isolated for two weeks. I need to be in my home and not allowed to go out in any public crowded

areas like schools, church, transits and other places that make individuals get contaminated of the

said communicable disease. While waiting for my schedule to meet the doctor and all the test to

be done and start the medication, I got my schedule for the final exam and I showed up on the

final exam even I was under isolation. I am conscious of my disease, how it can be transmitted to

other individuals, and I must recognize that I am accountable for whatever action I should take.

Competence is the nurse’s ability to use her/his knowledge, skill, judgment, attitudes, values and beliefs

to perform in a given role, situation and practice setting. Continuing competence ensures that the nurse

is able to perform in a changing health care environment. Continuing competence also contributes to

quality nursing practice and increases the public’s confidence in the nursing profession.

Because of my willingness to finish this program in a specified time, I took the final exam

knowing that I was not permitted to mingle with other people and I also attended my placement

without my instructor's guidance because I was unable to check my email where the message

has been sent. Being competent is not just about being able to do the role given, but also

having a judgment and attitude about your action. It was my willingness to encourage me to

continue what I began in this program knowing that I need to take action on my health for my

benefit and other welfare.

Ethical nursing care means promoting the values of client well-being, respecting client choice, assuring

privacy and confidentiality,5 respecting the sanctity and quality of life, maintaining commitments,

respecting truthfulness and ensuring fairness in the use of resources. It also includes acting with

integrity, honesty and professionalism in all dealings with the client and other health care team

members.

Knowledge- Each nurse possesses, through basic education and continuing learning, knowledge relevant

to her/ his professional practice.

My knowledge has been the foundation of my role as a student and as a healthcare provider

Being in the program for a few months I knew I was gaining information which would assist me t

o grow professionally.

Knowledge Application- The quality of professional nursing practice reflects nurses’ application of

knowledge. Nurses apply knowledge to practice using nursing frameworks, theories and/or processes.

They employ knowledge in the performance of clinical skills because the technical and cognitive aspects

of care are closely related and cannot be separated
