 A Christian philosopher
 The fundamental goal is the happiness of
human beings
 Views happiness as the finest virtue that can
be found in God.
 “What then, is God?”
 “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy
whole heart, with thy whole soul and with thy
whole strength; and for love for God, thou
shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” is the
central thesis of Augustine’s Christian ethics.
 The order of love by St. Augustine are as
follows:
 Virtue
 The moral excellence
 Goodness
 Righteousness and conformity in life
 Conduct to moral and ethical
principles
 He is against hedonism and Epicureanism.

ON THE PHILOSPHY OF STATE

 Augustine believes that a man belongs to two


institutions, namely, the church and the state
in which he upholds the supremacy of the
church over the state.
 The church and the state are inseparable like
the body and soul.

ON MORAL OBLIGATION

 To do good and avoid evil in our relationships


with our fellowmen.
 Reason recognizes the law of conscience.
 The Life of every man has the constant struggle between two forces; that of good and that of evil,
 “All men because they are mortal, must, of necessity, be miserable.”
