I. AIM(S)
To study one of the purification methods such as recrystallization and its
application in purification of coarse salt.

II. EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS

II.1. Equipment
 1 set of scales
 1 beaker glass (250 mL)
 1 graduated cylinder (50 mL)
 1 set of electric heating
 1 glass stirrer
 1 glass funnel
II.2. Materials
 Market kitchen salt crystals (50 grams)
 Lime powder (CaO) (1 gram)
 Dilute Ba(OH)2 solution
 (NH4)2CO3 solution
 Dilute HCl solution (150 mL)
 Distilled water
 Concentrated sulphuric acid
III. PROCEDURE
III.1. Pre-treatment
Heat 250 mL of distilled water with a beaker glass that has been weighed until
boiling for a while.

Weigh 80 grams of table salt, put in hot water while stirring, and reheat until
boiling, then filter.

Divide the solution into two parts for crystallization.

III.2. Crystallization by Evaporation
Add about 1 gram of calcium oxide CaO to one part of a salt solution.

Add a dilute solution of Ba(OH)2 drop by drop until the last drop does not form
precipitate.

Add drops of 30 grams per litre (NH4)2CO3 continuously while stirring the
solution .

Filter the solution and neutralize the filtrate with a dilute HCl solution.

Steam the solution to dry, so that NaCl crystals will be obtained shows by the colour
that is whiter than the original table salt.

Weigh the crystals and calculate the NaCl recrystallization yield.

III.3. Recrystallization by Precipitation
Saturate one part of the other solution with hydrogen chloride gas which can be made
by reacting table salt with concentrated sulphuric acid.

Stop the addition of gas after the addition of the last bubble gas does not occur
crystals formation.
Weigh the crystals and calculate the NaCl recrystallization yield. Observe and
compare the physical appearance of crystals produced in this procedure with those
obtained by evaporation.
