Missing Mondays Lesson

 REFLECTION
Doing so many practicals in
primary schools meant I had
very wrong expectations of
engagement with my year 10
class. The students gave little
to no response. They
understood the concepts
when pushed to answer. They
have previously demonstrated
understanding the concepts in
their earlier tasks. The lack of
response shook my
confidence a little and I felt
like this threw off my
presentation (was more
rushed than I would have
liked). Students understood
task and were excited to work
with well known brands in
their folios. However there
were still a few questions
surrounding the brief and a
little uncertainty about what
they want to do in their
brainstorm. Next lesson I will
go over their briefs with them
in detail and get them to
underline important
elements. Also I will
demonstrate a brainstorm
with them and have them
finish it within 20 minutes.
REFLECTION
Reiterating what is important
in the brief gave the students
a really clear idea of what is
expected of them in intis
assignment. I liked getting
them to move around the
class cause it got them moving
and a bit more lively.
Going through the research in
greater detail was also really
clear for them to understand
exactly what is expected of
them. I realise now that last
lesson I threw too much
information at them at once
which could have been why
the responses were a bit
average.
The students are still really
hesitant about contributing in
front of the class and putting
their ideas out there I am over
trying to do all the thinking for
them. Next lesson I’ll be
bringing in lollies as bribery.
REFLECTION
This lesson I wanted to revisit
using the design principles
and elements to analyse the
designs. I brought in some
lollies so if students
contribute they get one. This
actually worked pretty well,
most students were more
open to contributing in class
but still not a lot. I think in
future I will b doing paddle
pop sticks because this
contribution thing is really
annoying to teach with.
I’m noticing there’s starting to
become a big divide in the
progress in student work.
There’s some students who
are racing ahead with their
research and others still on
the brainstorm. I’m working
on altering expectations for
these students however I have
to keep it fair for all students
involved.

attention. Following advice
from Hang I worked hard to
remember to consistently
provide updates on time left
and expectations. I tried really
hard to circle the room this
lesson and talk individually to
each student to make sure
they understood the task and
were working in the right
direction. This really assisted
me in checking everyones
progress which I altered the
lesson to suit.
Most of the students hadn’t
finished their first page of
research off even after
spending 40 minutes of class
time on it so I needed to keep
some in at lunch time. This
wasn’t all bad as it gave me a
chance to work one on one
with them and make sure the
concepts were understood.
