Passport
Definition

 “ A passport can be defined as


an official (legal) document
issued by a competent public
authority (government) to
nationals or to alien residents
of the issuing country”.
The term "passport“ likely does not
derive from sea ports, but likely
derives from a medieval document
required to pass through the gate
("Porte") of a city wall.
Indian Passport
PURPOSE OF PASSPORT

 Permission to leave your own country


 Allows access to another country
 Provides evidence of legal entry into
another country.
 Means of authentic identification
KINDS OF PASSPORT

 Individual Passport
 Joint Passport
Individual Passport

 Individuals of a family traveling


together hold separate passports irrespective of age and
gender.
 Passports of father, mother, child, infant are all separate
from each other.
JOINT PASSPORT

 It means that two or more people traveling together


hold a single joint passport.
 Two relations are eligible for joint passport
 Spouses ( husband + wife)
 Either Parent + their Child
Drawbacks of Joint Passport
(Issued at one time)

 People who travel on a joint passport must always travel


together.
 The two people cannot travel to different countries at the same
time.
 Single person can travel only when the other person is in home
country.
 Only few countries allow joint passport.

 In addition to above drawbacks when a


person who’s name has been added to the
main passport issued in another person’s
name is never permitted to travel using that
passport unless accompanied by the person
to whom the passport was originally issued.
Types of Passport (INDIVIDUAL)

The types of passport currently issued are:


1.Normal Passport
2.Alien’s Passport
3.Children’s Identity Card
4.Diplomatic or Consular Passport
5.Official or Service Passport
6.International Red Cross
7.Laissez-Passer
Normal Passport
Most countries issue normal passports to its
citizens/nationals.
Also called as Ordinary / Regular Passport
Alien’s Passport

 This type of passport may be issued to


individuals living in a country, even
though they are not citizens or nationals
of that country.
 The sub types are:

1. Certificate of identity
2. Refugee Travel Document
Certificate of identity

It is issued by states to foreign


nationals who are for whatever reason,
unable to obtain a passport from their
state of nationality.
Refugee travel document –

• It is a travel document issued to a


refugee by the state in which she or he
normally resides allowing him or her to
travel outside that state and to return
there.
• It is also called a 1951 Convention
travel document
Children’s Identity Card

 Issued by some countries only instead of a passport, to


minor children who have not reached a specified
minimum age, e.g. the German ‘’Kinderausweis’’.
 These documents are normally accepted for
international travel only as the result of bilateral
agreements between governments, and may not be
recognized by many countries.
 ‘’Kinderausweis’’ is
a child's passport in
Germany issued up to 12
years with only six-year
validity.

 India, US, and few


other countries do not
recognise Kinderausweis
Diplomatic or Consular Passport

 Issuedto diplomatic, consular and other


government officials on missions entitling
the bearer to diplomatic or consular
status under international law and
custom.

 It
also may be issued to accompanying
dependents

Issued to government officials or other


persons on government missions for
work-related travel.

Other Special Types of Passports

Collective Passport –
 Issued to approved groups of students, youth
organizations
or tour operators planning to travel together overseas.
 There can be between 5 – 50 children and Young people
on one collective passport.
 Each group must have a named adult Group Leader to
travel with them.
 Popular in European Countries for Charter Tours.
Family Passport –

Issued to family members—father, mother, son, daughter.


There is one passport holder. The passport holder may
Travel alone or with one or more other family members.
A family member who is not the passport holder cannot
use the passport for travel unless accompanied by the
passport holder.
Emergency passport (temporary passport)
 Issued to persons whose passports were lost
or stolen, and who do not have time to obtain
replacement passports
Hajj passport
 Issued by many countries including India to
be used only for a hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Machine-Readable Passports

Today maximum passports are machine-readable


under the ICAO standards..
The most noticeable feature of a Machine-Readable
Passport (MRP) is two lines of printed OCR-B coded
information, located at the bottom of the page
containing the bearer’s biographical data and image
(the Machine Readable Zone, or MRZ)

The coded data enables airport staff


to use automated data readers to
quickly
and accurately collect passenger
data.
E _ Passports (Bio-metric)

 New biometrically enabled passports (e-


Passports) contain a contact less integrated
circuit chip.
 This microprocessor chip embedded in the front
or back cover, or center page, of the passport
displays data from the passport biographical
section and certain physically identifying
features, such as facial image, iris image or even
fingerprint images, are encoded.
Indian Passport

An Indian passport is a passport issued by order of the President


of India to Indian citizens for the purpose of international travel.

It enables the bearer to travel internationally and serves as proof


of Indian citizenship as per the Passports Act

 • Given names
 • Nationality
 • Date of expiry
 • Date of birth
 • Observations
 • Gender
 • Place of birth
 • Holder’s signature
 • Holder’s photograph
Passport Message

 A passport contains a message,


usually near the front of a
passport, requesting that the
bearer of the passport be allowed
to pass freely, and further
requests that, in the event of
need, the bearer be granted
assistance. The message is
sometimes made in the name of
the government or the head of
state.
General Information in Passport

Observations:

 This note may contain no information or may for example state


something like the following:
“This passport is issued in replacement of passport no.
L8765876R dated 3 June 2005 reported lost’’
India, Nepal, and Bhutan: (Bilateral)
Passports are not needed by citizens of
India and Nepal to travel within each
other's country, but some identification
is required for border crossing.
Only Indians do not require passports
for travelling in Bhutan while Bhutanese
can travel with their citizenship identity
cards.
Futuristic Indian Passport
PASSPORT STAMPS
(FOR IMMIGRATION PURPOSE)

 For immigration control, immigration officials of


many countries stamp passports with entry
stamps and exit stamps.
 Countries have different styles of stamps for
entries and exits, to make it easy to identify the
movements of persons.
 The shape of the stamp and the colour of the ink
may also provide information about movements.
In Hong Kong, entry and exit stamps use
different colors. Airport stamps used black
ink, land stamps used red ink, and sea
stamps used purple ink.
In India exit stamps are given in red colour
while entry stamps are given in blue.
The stamp can be rectangular, circular or oval.
