    Bone development occurs through two processes: intramembranous ossification where osteoblasts directly lay down bone within connective tissue membranes to form trabeculae and spongy bone; and endochondrial ossification where hyaline cartilage is first laid down and then replaced by bone, with osteoblasts developing from the perichondrium and periosteum to form spongy and compact bone around the cartilage template.
