CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design setting, information on the respondents and

sampling procedure, data gathering procedure, scoring and the statistical treatment used

in analyzing and interpreting the data gathered in the study.

RESEARCH DESIGN

A descriptive comparative research design will be utilized for this study. This includes

gathering the data that describes the events, organizing, tabulating, depicting and

describing the data that will be collected. The aim of this study is to find out “what is” that

is why observational and survey methods are frequently used to collect descriptive data.

The researchers believe that making use of the survey technique is suitable for the study.

On the other hand a comparative study is a type of descriptive research design which

involves comparing and contrasting two or more samples on the basis of selected

attribute at a time. The two mention research design is appropriate for this study because

the aim of the researcher is to describe the respondent’s level of awareness in terms of

HIV/AIDS basic information such as HIV/AIDS mode of transmission, HIV/AIDS

prevention, HIV/AIDS testing, and lastly the HIV/AIDS availability of healthcare services.

Another goal of this study is to compare the level of awareness and perception of the

respondents about HIV/AIDS.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The setting of the study will be focused on the different colleges of Arellano University

located within Legarda, Metro Manila. The selection were based on the following criteria;

the setting should be convenient to the researchers, it should be located within Arellano

University parameters. Second; the school must have the appropriate number of

respondents that will yield adequate representation. Third; the location of the school

should be in location that promote various activities which influences the student’s sexual

behavior.

Arellano University is a private, coeducational and nonsectarian university located in

Manila, Philippines. It was founded in 1938 as a law school by Florentino Cayco, Sr. The

first Filipino Undersecretary of Public Instruction. The university was named after

Cayetano Arellano, the first chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. It

operates seven campuses located throughout Metro Manila and the main is located in

Legarda Street Sampaloc Manila. The Arellano school of law is autonomous and

Sampling

Participants were drawn from a purposive sampling or also known as judgement

sampling. According to Polit and Beck (2008), in this particular method the researchers

will decide purposely to select who are particularly knowledgeable about the study. The
respondents will be randomly hand-picked for those who will answering the survey and

joining the awareness campaign on the day of the final data gathering. In addition; it gives

focus on particular characteristic of a population that are of interest, which will be best

enable to answer the question. This study was a sensitive one which pertains to HIV/

AIDS awareness and will be more acceptable to be answered by eighteen and higher age

by law, this age is when someone is officially and legally treated as an adult and was

mature enough to make important decision, without the guidance of a parent or other

adult.
