Active Listening Skills

Read the following Dialogue between grade 10 students James and Justin:

James: “I have a ton of things to do today! Not only do I have to do my regular

homework, but I have this assignment I had forgotten to do. I got an extension, but
only until tomorrow, so I can’t go out with Mya. Now she’s mad at me! And I told
coach that I would talk to everyone on the team about our tournament. This is just
too much!

The following chart illustrates a number of active listening skills that Justin could
use in the situation:

Skill Description Justin’s Response

Reflecting Repeat back to the speaker what you think you heard, using “This really is too much.”
basically the same words.
Paraphrasing Put what you heard into your own words, and say them back. “You really do have a lot to do. And it
doesn’t help that Mya is upset.

Clarifying Ask for more details. “How long do you think the assignment
will take?”
Reflecting Feelings Identify the emotion of the speaker and express it. “You must feel frustrated.”
